Despite the comparatively low turnout, full trophies and $1,008 purse were paid. Even the 125 Novices competed in one group this time - there were only 35! Riding the lone Bultaco entered, Robbie Pannell blasted round one and was in good shape for the overall until lowsiding a comer trying to repass Greg Biggs for the lead on lap three. Biggs (Yam) took it in just ahead of Terry Maddalozzo (Yam) for the OA win at 3-1, while Terry ended second with 5-2 marks over thi rd-ranking Craig Adams (Yam , 4-4). Two of the heavyweights in 250 Expert racing missed out on overall dollars due to crashes. Bobby Pickard (Pen) and Dicky Turnbo (Yam) showed 'em first and second in th e ope ner, b ut Turnbo was ca ught in the great get -off of the 125 Expert final, spraining an ankle and wrist, and Pickard ate it on lap one of the 250 second moto. Mike Jones (Kaw) got by Barry Callaway (Suz) and Mitch Milson (Bul) to take the moto, but Milson held low score of 3-2 to win over Jones (5·1) and Callaway (4-3). !!! 125 expert, Shawn Smith was WFO and out front aii way uniii end of lap one of the last moto. Coming out of the scoring tower tum, Smith lost control after swinging out near the fence and went over the bars. Within two seconds, he was hit by his own Yamaha, plus those of Eddie Walker and Dicky Turnbo, and lay on the track knocked cold as a wedge for five or six minutes. Walker was OK, but couldn't continue, Turnbo appeared to have a concussion and various hurts, and Smith finally came around bu t with a lot of pai n . In the confusion, Glen Boyett (Yam, 4-3) won overall over Mike Hullett (Suz, 8-1), Allen Pope (Suz, 6·4), and Pat Adamson (Yam, 5-5) . Many units of blood later and now missing a kidney and spleen, Shawn Smith still lies in the Whitney hospital, and will probably be transferred to one in Houston soon. A special race is scheduled for J anuary II , 19 76 at Whitney - a combinatio n mem ori al event for "Grandpa" Hutsell and benefit for Shawn. Dealers wish ing to pa rticipate by donating sets of trophie s or. merchandise to be a uctioned, and anyone interested in helping may contact Harvey Evans at Whitney Cycle Ranch or Joe London at the Dallas Times Herald. Time to pitch in, so let's do it! me me
