Then Pearl Habor! Action, and plenty Ft. Worth's Guy McClure roared into West Texas with one thing in mind - to win the 360 pro main event at the Amarillo Civic Center. o f it, all provided by the J ap an ese. Thirty fo ur year s lat er, to the da y, th e ac t ion was agai n provided by the Japanese. This time, with a little help from their fri ends. Not one of th em alive when th is co un try went to war. Today the risin g sun co unt ry makes the mach ines and o ur American kids banzai th em all across th e faces of this land. Berthoud was no excep ti o n as a full day of racing took off with abso lu t ely id eal co nd itio ns awa iti ng th e knobs. No dust, ex cellent surface and bite. What more co uld you ask for unless it 's the chec kered flag. One o f the truly fine races of the day was the 125 B class. Riding like he wa s on rail s was Alan Ray . Ra y got a go o d start in the first moto and smoothed his way to the win. Darcy Binder, Dale Ruggles and Sco tt Bradley all took off aft er him and nev er let up. Th e second moto started off in super fash ion, no falls and WFO . This time Ra y was fo urth or fifth into the first tum. A lap later he was in fITSt and starting to pull aw ay . He is one smooth rider. He should do very well when he get s to the Expert class. The overall was Ray , Binder, Ruggles . Steve Beckwith (Suz) rode two fine motos to take overal l ho n o rs in the 250 B class. The Open B group saw Way ne York boogie away fro m t he others o n his J ap an ese rocket. He had a 22 second lead which he held to the flag. Because of a shallow Expert field it was decided to run all Expert classes together. And run they di d with su per surprising results. In the fITSt moto Stacy Smith, o n his 125 Yamaha, banzaied the field. Smi th flew his "Yamaflyer" further than anyone all day on the long downhill j ump . Wayne (Hus) Sturm and J ack Todd (Hon) raced each other for second an d third spots. This was a good race with neither one wa nting the t hird slot. Mike Rus t on his Open Husky ra n very we ll, b ut t ired toward the end. Th e second moto , and t he monohauler with Smith aboard, did it agai n for an undisp uted first overall. This young man is a fine m o t o cr o sser, Anyone interested ought to co m e out and see him and the others. Get out from in front of your T .V. sets and put some co lor in your skin. The air is go o d for ya. · Results in Results Se ction. He d id just th at in one o f the most exciting races ever witnessed by cy cle enthusiasts this indoor season. After pl acin g th ird in the semifi nal heat , McClure managed to hold third p os it io n in the fro n t row at the start of the m ain . Fans anticipated a close race in volvin g McClure, pole positi on holder John Johnson, an d Terry Tripp, who was sand wic hed in between McClure and Johnson. Mc Clure , who was be aten on November 8th in Amarillo b y Wayne Caswell o f Pampa, mad e sure history would no t repeat itself. The Ft . Worth native popped a wheelie all the way to the number o n e turn after seeing the green flag waving. He beat b oth J ohnson and Tripp t o th e tum on his Bultaco. Tripp had caug h t J ohnson " fla t footed" when Fost er T an ne r waved that all impor tant star ti ng flag. T rip p took advantage of J ohnson's slow sta rt and after all th e bumping, came o ut b ehind McClure. J ohnson's Bultaco co uld not overcome Tripp and h is Harl ey and the 15 th lap saw McClure t ake the victory flag , T ripp sec o nd , and Johnson right Guess how big a lead Alan Ray has in the 125 class. The 250 class divides the Colorado t urf up into at least 10 different lines.
