Speedway ace, Bruce Penhall , trying to keep in shape and dabbing into an unfamiliar form of racing, won the Open Beginner on his CZ with wins in the final two motos after a fifth in the first round almos t had him out of the act io n. By Andi Gangewer DSS~ E LSIN O RE, CAL, NO V. 22 Fourteen-year-old Mike Tidwell again dom inated Elsinore's TT, winning three classes plus th e Buddy race. The first class th at TIdwell (Ya m) won was the 125 Ex pert race. Mike had a great lead all the way in mota one. The closest racer was Don Acker (Ha n ). No on e co uld touch Mike and he rolled across the finish lin e as if there hadn't been a race. The next mota was a rough one for Acker. After the flag was thrown and Tid well took his place at the head of the p ack, 16-year-old Jim Spie gle darted into second, holding Acker to th ird, but not for long. Acker found a hole and slipped into second to remain there until the finish. . Need I say who won the final mota? Yep , it was mighty Mike who again popped off the line ru-st and coasted across the finish in first. Spiegle didn't show up for the last moto so the seco n d spot was a battle b etween Acker and Jim Ingersol. Th er e was no change in any of the positions as Tidwell, Ack er an d Ingersol fin ish ed one-two -three. With a great gro up o f 25 0 Experts to challenge TIdwell, he had to work a little harder for th is victory . Ron Sheets was first off the line followed closely by Tidwell andJoe St effen. As they wound their way through the esses and over th e jump it was TIdwell out fro n t again. Sheets still held second and Steffen third. A lap later, Greg Zehner (Yam) had mo ved into second and Steffen was now in th ird . Sheets had drifted way back to seventh. Mota two was much the same as Mike too k his usual place at the front and let the others follow him, and Greg was second and Steffen third. No change was made in any of the positions and moto two came: to an end as it had begun. Zehner had had enough of taking a back seat to Tidwell. The green flag flew and this time he was out front. Mike tried all the tricks in the book, but Gr eg wasn 't ab out to give up his lead. They finished this way: Zehner , Tidwell, Dean Meyer and St effen. Mike too k th e overall.
