Indoor Semi-Pro Short Track San Jose Fairgrounds Satu rday Night December 6, 13, & 20 415-327-4461 * * SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. , NOV. 28-29 Mike Bast pro ved to be the best Bast in a topsy turvey weekend o f Speedway racing at th e San Francisco Cow Palace. In the Indoor Championship Final Mike foll owed brother Steve off the line and held a slight lead over Jim Gresham. Gresham lost traction and aimed for the wall as Mike took everything in hand and coasted home for the big win. He was followed by Steve and Dubb Ferrell , but the road to that final was not smoothly paved. Friday night's event started with everything but simple racing and a track that broke up motocross style. Saturday night was a vast improvement for the 6,000 assembled who were mostly newcomers to the business. Friday It was definitely not to be Mike Bast's night. The U.S. Speedway Champion encountered fallen bodies and motors in the second Handicap heat and th e res tart wa s no better. In the first co rn er, Mik e did a double pirouette ab out five feet up in the air. In the first Scr atch heat he managed to break the tape and it was all over for his part. Bru ce Penhall and Alan Ch ristain pasted themselves together for much o f the night's better racing, despite the tornup track. They b o t h managed to make th e Scratch and Handicap Mains with Alan taking the Scratch and Penh all crashing. The John Fisher backed motor was third in the Handicap and Penhall cras hed again. Penhall shined the troops on in the opening Handicap, off the 30, leaving Christain to edge out Barclay Trehal for second. Dubb Ferrell had an easy third Handicap after getting by Randy March despite the chuck holed track. They both returned to do the same in the Semi. Dennis Robinson was a shining light for the Northern troops in the fourth Handicap with a win over defending Champ Steve Bast. He wasn 't quite so lucky in the Semi though. While moving Jerry Bowers aside, his chain went askew as he headed for the checkered and Steve Bast went wide and down to miss the Fran k's Communications . special and rider. Barclay Trehal led off th e Handicap Main but on th e fourth lap March grabbed a tigh ter line and got by for the checkered. Steve Bast took the E-Z win in the firs t Scratch sem i over Steve Gresham and Christain cruised home in the second over " flash y fox" Penhall, leaving Cherry and Trehal off to the Consolation. The first two from the Cansy and Main were to go to the Scratch run offs Saturday night. Norm Denny went for the action but managed to 'sm ack the concrete wall and Trehal went on for the win. The Scratch Main was all Basts . Sat urday The second night of full program racing was underway and the grandstands came alive in the second Handicap heat. Dubb Ferrell was havin g some trouble getting his motor to run right. The two min ute sign went up and Dubb went for his back up motor. The two were up, then gone, and he was ex cl u d e d wi t h considerable unhappiness. It got worse when Dennis Robinson couldn't get the starter to raise the gate and in turning around stalled the motor. The crowd was irate
