Spencer Clau ss blasted through the checkers before the angry Dan iels could pick it back up. The second moto was almost a repeat. . Rick Ree d got another huge holeshot, with Daniels at mi d-pack, and Wheeless again in las t. Within a few laps, Ree d had dropped to fourth, and Wh eel ess had taken t he lead, followed by Dan iels. Wheeless was n't fooling ar o und, and by mo to's e nd he ha d bui lt up a 1000fo o t lead , followe d by Dan iel s an d a fast closing Derry Gardner. Wheeless took the overall, followed by Daniels with a 3-2 score, Gardner with a 4-3, and Reed with a 6-4 finish , Ronnie . Fo o te wo n fifth place money in o ne of his first Expert races. Believe it or no t, the 25 0 Exp ert class was nearl y as spectacular . San Mar cos' Ric ky Pilgri m bro ugh t out h is YZ Mo no and ho leshot the firs t m oto , followed very closely by Bryan Briggs (Yam) and Ro bby Hernlund (Hus ), bot h of Aust in . The three were really d icing it , and after ab out three lap s Pilgr im ran off the trac k, gassin g it a little too mu ch to hold off Hernlund and Briggs. Briggs . too k th e lead and hel d it un til moto 's en d . Hernlund w as a secu re seco nd, an d Pilgr im w orked h is wa y bac k up to third. Pilgrim grabbed the lead again to start the second moto, with Briggs an d Hernlund close behind. He rnlund p assed Briggs in the early go ing, an d appeared to have second place. Briggs repassed Hernlund, bu t b ogged it in a comer , so Hernl und moved in to second agai n . Hernlund m ust have kno wn th at if the order stayed th e same as it was h e wo u ld get second overal l, because he real ly started pu shing Pilgri m. Two co mers fro m th e checkers he tr ied to cu t in side , o nly to slid e down. That gave Briggs the overall with a 1-2, fo llowed by Pilgrim with a 3- 1. Hemlund's crash dropped h im to third overall via a 2-4 sco re, and David Steams (YZ) took fo urth wi t h a 5-3. Roger Brown recovered fr om las t week '5 crash at Aus t in and won the Open Expert clas s wi th relative ease . The New Bra un fels ace ho oked up hi s 4 00 Yamaha off th e gate in both mo to s, leading fro m wire to wire . Ro bert Reynolds (CZ) of San Antonio had other ideas about who was going to take the $100 first place cas h , b ut he never co uld . quite get by Bro wn . St uart William s (Hus) of Austin put in two good rides for th ird ov erall, foll owed by ageless Bill Kasson (YZ) of Austin, who claims that his battered Yamrnie is "just an old Fo rd." The Round Rock Rocket, Milton West, had fifth in hand until one of Lockhart's mesquite thorns deflated his ridi ng abilities, leaving tha t position to Stacy Howle (Bul) of Austin. 79 Novice riders signed up to race, with (what else?) the 125 Novices being the largest class. Jeff Frazi er (Hon) took that class with a 2-1 finish, after Kirk Hanna (Y am ), who has just moved up fro m the m inibike clas s won the first heat. Hanna took second ove ral l. T roy Patterso n of Austin (Suz) won the 100 class in what many considered to be an upset. Kevin Horton (Ho n) has wo n t h is class many ti mes, b ut Pa tt erso n won with a 1-1 score. Jack Beckham (Suz) was second with a 3-2 score, and Ho rto n to ok third after a 2-3. Fo rt Worth 's Brian Wilso n won the 250 No vice class with a pair of wire to wire wins. an d Aus ti n's David Wall ace (Hus) won th e In termediate clas s with an identical sco re . The Open Novice class was really mixed up. Austin's Jim Hohlt (Mai) came o ut o n top with a 2-2 score, af ter Kent Kottler over came a bad st art and won the first hea t and Mike Mollere Hus) won t he second he at . Kottler r Mai ) wo n the fi st heat aft er passing Moliere an d Hoh l t , Mo llere fell and finished sixth. Hohlt took second, follo wed by Aust in ace Lee Biggar t (Yam) . Mo llere came back and won the sec ond m o to , follow ed by Hohlt. Kottler had bike trouble in th at he at and placed fift h , but still ca me out with a second overall d ue to a 1-5 score. Mol lere was th ird with a 6-1, and Biggart to o k fourth with a 3-4 .
