Kerry Pet erson just keeps on winning . th is t ime overall at the Hill-in-the-h ole. .1 v By An n A. Powell O RANG E, CAL., NOV. 16 Saddleback Park's Hili-in-the-Hole does not enjoy the greatest reputation . All by itself it is rough, .steep , mean, nasty. Then as a topper, climbs held on this hill are a matter of getting o ver fastest .. . racing not only nature, but also the clocks. But, nearly 70 brave souls lined up this m orn in g to tackle the big hill and the clocks. An d , just to keep its po or rep u ta tion in tact, th e h ill thr ew riders every place b ut over the crest. Riders sailed up in the air, lan ded in' bushes, tried to climb banks, and slid down ro ck faces. Of the 70 riders who each tried at least two times to go over the top, only nine man ged to com plete the ru n. Even those who got over the top were not doing consistently well . Doug Hal l, riding in two classes, had four tries at the top, but only one over. Hall 's highly modified 250 Bultaco was the sm allest bike to crest the hill. At the opposite end of the line-up, only three riders in the Open class man aged to score overs. All were moun ted on highly-modified Triumphs, an d the scores they p osted were disa ppointing in light of Hall's ti me of 9.74 seconds. But the fastest tim e of the day went to a ri der wh o h as racked up a perfec t sco re in all the hillclimbs sponsored by both the Saddl eb ack Hillclimbers' Association and De Anza Cycle Park during 19 75 . Kerry Pe terso n, o n his am azin g stock 400 Maico , zoome d over th e hill his first tim e at th e starting line with a ti me of 8.9 0 seconds. This ti me held as th e day's fast est. Even though he scored th e fast est ti me of th e da y, Peterson ha d to mak e a final ru n if he were to ta ke the to p trophy for the cl imb. Every class winner ha d on e cha nce for a final run at that trophy . This comp e tit io n, overal l co ming after everyone h ad alr eady t ried th e hill at least twice, meant going over ever rough terrain th an before . The hill had been bad to start with, but after 70 ride rs had pushed , shoved, bounce d and banged their bikes up as far as possible, the hill was nearly impossible. But after the winners all had one more try, Kerry Peterson still won. His time, 12.49 seconds, was a good indication of how the hill had deteriorated, but it was a time that held and gave Peterson the overall win for the day . • Results in Results Section .
