After a Saturday afternoon practice
session and again Sunday morning, 225
riders lined up for th e Le Mans start
promptly at 12 Noon - ligh tweights on
on e side of the track and h eavyweights
on the other. The big bikes were off
followed by the lightweights a few
minutes later and fortunately there was
a fine 70 degree 20 mile an hour breeze
to clear things up a bit, as riders
stretched out in a criss cro ss fashion
over the numerous hairpins, gulleys,
and through the scrub oaks and
mesquite bushes.
After over two hours of fun the
winners em erg ed , happy and tired - Big
Bike overall Bobby Pickard. well known
for recent motocross wins, riding out of
Penton of Dallas, and Small Bike overall
Cooper Mangold, of Grandbury, Texas
riding for Suzuki of Arlington.
Framed genuine 100 dollar bills went
to the overall winners in addition to
trophies and armloads of merchandise.
Other wi nne rs lined up with framed
silver dollars going to each class winner.
Merchandise prizes went to the first 10
places in each class . The $ 7000 worth of
merchandise was donated by over 75
No rth Texas dealers and while it was
being distributed, Big D. Yamaha Bill
Wiese stood up on th e judges' stand and
threw out over $150 in o nes, l Os, 20s,
and 5s to the losers. T he better th an 20
mp h wind scat tered the mo ney several
hundred years past the stampeding he rd,
and there may still be a . $20 o r two
layin g out there in the field for some
cow to graze on.
There were also more prizes for the
riders fro m the farthest distance: Tom
Lewis, Pueblo, Colorado who also won
fifth Open and Dennis Larrett, of
Beulah, Co lorado, fourth in the 125
class.
Oldest rider J ay Henry of Henry's
Yamaha, Temple, Texas; an d youngest
rider Johnny Lamanc of Ft. Worth also
took home special trophies.
