': CYCLE NEWS CENTRAL Texas State Championship enduro circuit, Round Six By J ack Henry POST, TEX., NOV. 9 The Post Enduro has been voted "Best in Texas" for the last two years at the annual T.S .C.E.C. Awards Banquet by the top 20 riders in each class. This 93 -mile run was no exception. . 7:00 a.rn, - Notorious 20-mile Chuck Spaugh held the riders meeting and welcomed 550 riders to the enduro, located on the Jack Lott Ranch. Outstanding weather and bright sun warmed us up for 4 .5 miles as we came into the first checkpoint one minute ' early, quickly signed the protest sheet and boogied on down to more rocky rim trails and scenic beauty, if you had time to look at it. This checkpoint was later found to have a clock with a loose minute hand so Charlie Bishop's excellent checkpoint computers were started one minute early. This time was later corrected on the final scoresheet, The "C" riders and Women's class ended an easy 37.5 mile loop with the tie breaker check and the ~' A " and "B" riders were left to fend cactus, rock and sand for another 50 miles. At 50.55 miles we came to a hill named Richard Walker's Hill, but that's not what we called it or him before we reached the top. There was a dog leg at the very bottom and riders lined up. I bumped into my riding partner, overall winner Don Sanford just as I made the comer and from then on up it was paddle city. Good things come in small packages, so good old L.T.R. threw us into a little canyon called "Remember Los Cruces," after the fateful enduro where 300 entered and two finished . We bunched up and called each other names and mentally evaluated the riding ability of the guy ahead. At 64.45 miles the more civilized of the L. T. R. left what was left o f their noon meal (dead cow) for the P.B.M .A., or so the route sheet said. Again the Lubbock boys let us get back on time before running us up Buffalo Gap about 85 miles out where m any good riders had to have help getting up this powdered and rocky 500 foot hill. On to checkpoint five at 88 miles, and with a known finish at 93 we could finally let the hammer down. Good thing, as some riders found a trail of new ribbon running for about one half mile to Lostville. But no problem getting back on time if you knew AMA rules. Most of the riders I talked to enjoyed this timekeeper ride very much, as it seems we have been having killer enduros lately with low finisher percentages. However, the Lubbock Trail Riders vow to make up for this one with their National enduro this coming April. Next time y'all better leave that lin e with front end of that thar Pent 'n in'a air, 'c ause you're gonna be late. It was one of those days for circuit point leader Henry Bostick, like at the first checkpoint where he endoed coming in and lay dazed for a few m om en ts, but crafty Ro nald Brady says "Give him t he number that was up when he hit t he ground." Ch arl es Spaugh, J r. broke his collarbone abou t 60 miles out and still finished with zero p oints and second overall, top "B" rider. With the compliments I heard after the run, it's no wonder the Lubbock Trail Riders have a waiting list to join their club. • Results in Results Section. 75mile GP cross country at Midado By Frank Harrison STEPHENVILLE, TEX. , NOV. 16 In the heart of the beautiful rolling North Central Texas hill country west of Ft. Worth .lies Midado Raceway, ranch-type complex of hills, creeks, gulleys and rolling terraced grazing land operated as a cycle park by Dale and Doris Carlson. Most any Sunday, something is going on, and this particular Sunday, it was their biggie - the fourth Annual Grand Prix Cross County; seven and one half miles per lap, 10 ti mes around - 75 miles, and over $7000 in merchandise resting up on t he hill for t he first lOin class along with some glittering cash , wrapped and fra med. The course was a fun course, not a destruction derby, and it was interesting but not risky. If one wanted to play Evel off the cliff, he could, but he could Checker time for big·bore winner Bobby Pickard at the Midado Cross-Country. Payoff was a framed $ 100 bill. ; - ~ust,.ies - - - -- - - - ~ III • ~ Smash itl Pound itl .A ~. ,.. ."
