Longcor rousts the troops at Wilseyville hare scrambles 0') M By W. H. Spencer Cl) ..c s WILSEYVILLE , CAL ., NOV. 16 Cl It was old home week at th e Polka Dots annual Wilseyville Hare Scrambles in Sch aads Resort. Saturday all night parties were 22 prevalent leavin g many unable to answer th e shot gun blast of th e start. Wilseyville, rated as one of th e toughe st and best cross countries in the states, has been contested by Dick Mann, Carl Cranke, Toasted Almonds, Jeff Smith, Lars Larson and lots of other heroes over th e past 18 years. The overall win and Open Expert went to Dave Longcor on th e Car Care Bultaco, The same opera tion that won both the 250 and Op en last year was the hot com bination. Their margin of victory was 3 :34 over Chris Carter (ISDT factory Yam ) and Nati on al Novice champion Ted Davidson. Th e day's action was run by class, with the exception of the Old Timers who were combined with th e 125s . . M.O. R.E.' s Russ Sanford was giving the spiel of happenings, and Don Link was watching the clock. The sweep second push ed to the 8: 30 mark and the shotgun blas t wo ke up most of th e hungover riders flat footed and minus their helmets. Those that were ready , includin g minibike steward Bill Arbogast, got off easy while others like Don Stover and Donny Cantaloupi, were left shuffling. . Th e serious side of the four nine mile lap s, left well over half the field out. Stover took the Old Timers Exper t class win and little Cantaloupi took third in the 125 Expert class behind last year's winner Bill Scarlett. Steve Ferroni took theJunior portion in good style . In the first wave of 250s, Rick Hoc king and Alex Jorgensen got off close and up front. Rick and John Silva met later at a creek crossing and discussed the disgusting day's ac tion. Rick was out with a m issing rear brake, everything wiped out on a tree trunk, and Silva again discovered his bullet proof Can-Am isn 't, Charlie Halcomb (Hus) took the lead about halfway and never af ter relinquished it . Halcomb lost out on the overall by about a minute to Longcor. At the end of the day they were off discussing ways to get in t o the Trans -AMA support race next week. By the time the Open class rolled to the line , th e traction was drying. The first lap showed that suspensions were to be vital to an yone wanting to finish with their vitals. It was Longcor taking the lead and Ted Davidson doing a lot of the pack work along with Jon Ogilvie and Haywire Haynes. By the end of th e first lap, Longcor had put the distance to about a minute. After the second lap , Longcor and the Car Care Pursang were long gone. Davidson was soli chasing Carter's ISDT Yammie and Morrill dropped out with undertimed ills. On the third lap Davidson got by Carter, but it was short lived . Storming up a hill , a member of the National Motorcycle Patrol dumped it righ t in front of the ace Novice of the Nation and got a set of Yamaha knobbies right up the back. Davidson crashed, and that left the Rocky Cycle in the clear despite the fact that, by the end of the run, he only had three marks from the back check. The thrill of Wilseyville never leaves the soul, despite the pitfalls of racing, like Rick Hocking breaking two motors. There is still always n ext year. One parting remark for next ye ar. To those destroyers that come up simply to harrass and blow their co llec tive minds, stay away. Anybody caugh t riding on Cl) u Cl) Immed iate oetlftry. Road Race. Dirt Track.
