Bowman outlasts ORA competition By Terry Rezek CALI FORNIA CITY, CAL. , NOV. 23 Tim Bowman (400 CZ ) led, battled for the lead, and in the end ou tlas ted Cordis Brooks and Wayne Garrett to win the ORA Hare Scrambles. The cancella tio n of Sunday's District 37 race brought many Ac\IA District riders out to the fast side of Cal Cit y, where many of them discovered that DRA riders are not to be taken lightly. Fast is fast, no matter where you prefer to ride. Tim Bowman led the Novice-Amateur-Expert charge to the bomb. Two miles later, he was passed almost simul taneously by Brooks (250 Bul) and Wayne Garrett (400 Yam). Bowman and Garrett held a battle of their own while Brooks started building a firm lead. Unfortunately, his half-mile lead evaporated about five miles from the pits when the Bul barfed its innards. Garrett and Bowman continued their battle only a hot breath apart into the home check motocross section. Bowman tried a tricky pass and dropped it in a tum. Garrett sped away, only to suffer a seizure a few miles out on the second loop. Bowman gratefully accepted the lead and brought his CZ in for the win. Bowman races both District and DRA races. Meanwhile, Invader Tom Kelly really pushed his Shell Motors 125 Yamaha and rode a brilliant race to finish second overall and first Amateur. Dean Miller (250 Yam) was trying to make the Amateurs noticeable as well, breathing down Kelly 's neck to finish third overall , first 250. Jamie Avels (4 00 Yam) had to settle for fourth, finding that a flat rear tire makes for uncertain. riding. District rider Mike Patchen (250 Yam) made it three Amateurs in the top five. First Novice in was Chuck Fowler (400 Yam) and first Beginner looks to be Woody Childers, Jr. Also on the list of firsts today were M.S. Dyott, first Senior Novice and Leo Blomgren, first Senior Beginner. In the Women's Division we are happy to see Leslie KIug back at the races. She is sti ll as fast and beautiful as ever, taking first Novice. Among the Beginners, Jolene Payne again showed them how to get there first. A young rider with a great future , Jolene is stacking up transfers like a streetcar conductor. For those 1 missed, when you see me and my tape recorder in the pits, tell me your story. 1 may not believe it, but 1 • migh t write it! Resul ts in Results Section. Tom Kelly kept his 125 wired on a big-bike cou rse, finished second overall, first Amateu r. If you're not advertising in Cycle News... You're losing business!
