Gennai took the mon ey main an d an early lead in the nin e race high point series that will have a poi nt payoff aro und th e S 1000 m ark in m id-] anuary . Gen nai came o ff the line in fo urth and picked his way throu gh th e mob until he caugh t the fast fleeing Delacy, who is st ill thinki ng number one fo r next year. On the fo u rt h lap Gennai snoo kered th e Canccilla Yamaha rider and slid underneath for a slick pass. Robert Norton pulled from fo urt h to sec on d and spent some tim e dueling with Ron Knarr. Knarr passed No r to n th en crashed. Norton cou ld n 't retake second bec au se his bike had seize d . Lon Wardell th en moved into second , whi ch he held for a few laps b efore crashi ng. By this time Knarr had recov ered and was right there for the ta keover. T he second moto started with Wardell taking the holeshot but Manly was qu ick to take the le ad away from him . Knarr crashed and lost so me gro und on th e o the rs who were all close together. No rton b obb led j ust en ough to give Knarr time to close th e gap , an d the four riders started to sprea d it o ut. Bunc hing up aga in, No rton passed War dell , Kn arr fo llowed, and Manly disappeared, leaving Norton in the lead: With a new burst of energy Knarr took over th e lead . Manly wa s now coming back in to the ga me after replacing his ch ain, and the ch eckered flag was in sight. Manly duc ked under Wardell just in t im e fo r it to co un t. th e fla g deciding a finish in g order of Kn arr, Norton. Manly and Wardell for this one. The purse went to Kn arr. • Alex] orgenson (C. A) didn't get the best of st ar ts in t he first 250 Expert moto, but he didn't ne ed it. In the b eginning o f th e first lap he was running abo u t ei ghth , and by the en d of that lap he was in t hird and still ch argi ng . By th e end of th e th ird lap h e w as way out in fro n t an d in no da nger of los ing it . ] orge nso n didn 't have as far to travel to take th e lead in th e seco nd moto, but this time all eyes were o n Floyd Davis. Afte r a sixth place fini sh in th e firs t moto and a last place start in the seco nd, he started c om ing on strong and pas sed everybody o n th e tra ck excep t ]Ofln' in the firs t th ree laps. • Chico hosts the "Rice Bowl" By Donna Fowler CHICO, CA L., NOV. 16 On e hundred twenty riders braved three days of rain and six tons of rice hulls to open the Winter scrambles season at Cycleland Speedway. Manager John Sudberry had spent the week mixing dry rice hulls and water in an attempt to get a good, deep; cushion on the track surface. Mother Nature then dropped her bomb in the form of three da ys of rain turning the entire track surface into a wet , soggy challeng e for anybo d y berserk enough to give it a try . On Sunday th e sun ca me out and J ohn 's efforts were rewarded with a good day of rough scrambles. The race hulls and water hol es messed up goggles an d number plates, but didn't damp en the spirit o f the riders an d spectators.
