Puyallup Raceway Muddy Medford MX By Sue Sykes By lynne Diltz WHITE CITY, ORE., NOV. 9 Early morning practice was in progress at Medford's Motocross Park, but most attention was focuse d on action of a different sort. Joe Michel fro m TV Channel 5 was taping a line-up of gorgeous street bikes on display by local bike sho ps. A n ew Suzuki RM 100 and its owner, Bruce Smylie, took the spotlight as the filming of dirt bikes began. It was muddy after a week o f rain, and after a couple of passes, it was nex t to impossible to distinguish riders. For the first time this season, there were eno ugh girls for a Powder Puff. Dee Hanscom was ready for a win, and Cher yl Heath wasn't too shabby in second either. There was a shortage of kids and 100cc machines, so Juniors and Experts were run together. Bruce Smylie just sails around that tr ack and leaves no doubt about who 's go ing to win . Twenty-eight Juniors stormed off to a 25 0 start an d mu ch to everyone 's surprise, made it clear to the corkscrew before seven went down in a heap. After they began t o string out, the scorers ju st about wen t nuts. Muddy nu mbers on riders and bikes mad e identifica tion a • bit hard. Results in Results Section. Park PUYALLUP, WASH. , NOV . 9 Classes were packed at Puyallup Raceway for th e Sund ay Pro Money Guarantee Race; a prelude to the November 16. Trans-AMA. The all new track was in top condition and the excitement of the Trans-AMA filled the air. Honda riders Bill Joyce and Gary Racc a split mota wins to take-home the top pay in 125 Pro action. Rac ca hel d the lead on lap two first time out and kept it up as Joyce, ba ck in seventh from th e starting turn, worked his way up to the n umber two position. The second mo ta saw Racca out in front again with Joyce running fifth . Joyce pressed Ed Davis for two lap s before he go t around , then p layed it coo l for three laps un til th e right chanc e came to get aro und Racca. Joyce held the lead for the remaining eight laps an d to ok the flag. Suzuki rider Gary Potts, a regular in the 250 class now, rode a fantastic first place ride to thrill all. Can-Am mounted Blain Elled ge kept up an eager pa ce and it paid off with a second overall. Mark Gregson (Kaw] made a clean sweep of the Open Pro class with two solid wins .
