" • First Dirt Factory GP By Marvin Patton BRENTWOOD, CAL. , NOV 8-9 The Dirt Factory of Concor d was the host and sponsor of the first annual GP Motocross held at Sand Hill Ranch. 128 Novice riders, from as far away . as Long Beach and Palm Springs in Southern California, came to compete. Three new Pen tons were to be awarded to the best rider in eac h class. Greg Mus catel! (lio n ), 125 Division I, wal ked aw ay in th e first mota giving ro om for Mike Dellerrera (Yam) to t ake an easy second. J oe Grassi (Han) was first off th e lin e in th e second mota, followed b y Randy Canale (Ha n) and Mike DeHerrera (Ya m ). Joe lost his chain twice an d Randy took o ve r the lea d . Gr eg Mu scatel! (lion ), ge t t ing a poor start, very quickly pushed b y the . leading riders and finally Randy Canale (Ha n) , t o ta ke o ver th e lea d . Greg took the overa ll, and Mik e De Herrera was second. Twenty four o f th e top 125 riders had a chance to test th eir riding a bili ty in a 3 0 minute run -off on Sunday. Twenty five 250 riders and 14 Open riders would also go fo r a new Penton. On S unday th e 125s were first to hit the co urse. Greg Muscatell (Ha n ), took the lead an d John T raverso (Han), who finished sixth on Saturday, fo llowed in second . Greg had a go o d lead, but Jo h n started to apply pressure. On the straight J ohn took the lead fo r three quar t ers of a lap, but G reg go t the insid e of a co rner and left him eating dirt. From that point on Greg shot aro und th e co u rse to an easy win. John protested Greg's bi ke . The engine was disman tled and fo und to be according to 125 specs. John had to settle fo r a trophy instead of a new Penton. Steve Young (Kaw) took th e lead early in the 250 ru n-off and co uld not be caught. He was so far o ut in front he couId have made a pit stop and still win. On th e last lap, atop the long uphill, the What's th is you say? It 's Sand Hill Ranch, of course.
