Kirschbaum WICHITA, KS., OCT. 19 Wichita Sprockets M.C. held a motocross at th e new Cheney Lake track with 128 racers. The track had a lon g straight- a-way and some good jumps. In the Beginner 125 class Jim Gfeller finished I -I , Fred Wells was 3-4 fo r second o verall, and J erry Veat ch 2-5 for third. In th e 250 Open class Kent Brown was 1·1 and Jim Prior 2-2. First moto in t he 125 Junior cla ss, Warren Wiobe, on a new Yamaha, took it all the w ay . In the second rnoto . Vernon Ak e led for five laps with Alan Girrens in cl ose. Girrens passed, but Ake took ba ck first pl ace right at the finish line. Gary Witt finished with a bi g lead in the first m oto in the Senior class. In th e seco nd moto Darren Rhoten led for five laps until he h ad bike trouble. Witt took over first an d again st retched out a big lead . Darren Rh oten got the hole sho t in the 250 Senior fir st m oto and held t he lead with Gar y Wit t close behind. In the second moto Marty Kennedy led for two lap s when Rh oten an d Witt go t by . Rh oten st retc hed ou t a big lead over Witt. In the Ope n Junio r class Steve Herman led the first moto fo r tw o lap s until Dan Girren s passe d an d held. Caswell won the main event with his 350 Honda sponsored by Sharp 's Honda of Pampa, T exas. Caswell survived the number one tum and held his own the entire 20 laps. McClure, riding a 3 60 But sponsored by Bultaco International of Ft. Worth , kept pace with Caswell but could n ot overc ome the speedy Pampa racer. With only four laps to go , McClure was hampered somewhat wh en a lapped rider got between him and Casw ell . The rider was finally fla gged to move over and let the pursuing Ft. Worth rac er make hi s unsuccessful challenge . Last m onth 's winner, John Johnson of Amarillo, fail ed to qualify for the m ain aft er he placed fourth in the semis. However, Johnson and Amarillo high school senior Ben ny Spears shared th e point honors with 425 points after two races. In the Sportsman (360-B) class, Gary Sooter o nc e again made a clean sw eep by capturing his heat, semi; and the main o n h is David Brown Sports Center sponsored 250 Bul. Terry Brown fin ished seco nd on his 3 6 0 Yamah a for the same. Sooter now has 600 points, with t he nearest challenger being Brown at 42 5. David Copeland of Lubbock let Amarillo riders know he was in town by dom inating th e 125cc class . He rode his 12 5 Yamaha to an easy victory over Amarill o 's Rick y Higgins and his 125 Honda. Morris T ro xell of Canyon, Texas co n t in ued to be in a class b y himself as he ea sily won th e Mini-Man number two class with his XR 75 Honda wh ile 6-year-o ld J o n Birdsong agai n dazzled the cr owd by finish in g third in Min i-Man divi sion o ne o n hi s Indian 5 0.
