Sward finished about a minute ahead of his desert nemesis Preston Gerber (Bul) on the rugged course which was run over two separate loops. Gerber's riding buddy Dave Blaylock (Bul ) was third overall and first 250. A fine day for racing saw the event get underway at 11 a .m , with over 230 eager desert freaks bouncing toward the smoke bomb. A minor rush to get onto a certain trail left a tangle of bikes and bodies only abo u t 20 yards from the starting line. Getting his air box flattened was Boise's Dave Newell, who 's always a threat on the courses near Murphy . Also in the jumble was Steve Purdy. who broke a foot and couldn't even take a nice trail ride on his Frontera, The rest of the pack was off and running though, and it was Bob Sward who roared in to the pits first at the completion of the first loop. Sward, with Gerber hot on his heels, blasted o ut for the second loop which was laid out on new terrain. The others ca me scootin' in sho rtly, with Caldwell's Ron Dillo n (Yam), the I.M.A.'s 250 champ, right up near the leaders. Ron was in good position to dice with Sward and Gerber un til he was slowed by a handlebar snapping off. A tough break, since the Ram Bam is the first points race in this year's desert series. At the finish it was Sward with a comfortable lead over Gerber. Sward. as it turned out. was not far fr om disaster himself. Looking over the wi nning Kawasaki in the pits revealed that a pi nch bolt had worked loose and the front wheel was about to falloff. This could produce a rude awaken ing at 50 mph! Other racers began to pull into the finish with several local riders putting in a fantastic effort. Boise 's Bruce Harris made up a gawdawful lot of ground on the second loop to take fourth overall. Bruce had really battled to finish so well. Top Amateur Open bike went to Lynn Cowles (Yam) who collected his class brass, a dynamite trophy with a clock in it, a $50 gift certificate, a gas tank and other contingencies for his winning effort. Lynn was 36th overall despite the efforts of his Columbian pit crew to have the first 35 fmishers disqualified. Other Amateurs pu tting in good rides were Bob Dillon (Yam) and Bob
