Taylor, Vidic, and Jennings sweep Irwindale Acker tops anxious Amateurs By And i Gangewer E LS INO RE , CAL. , NOV. 1 By Jon Hayt Don Acker has become a very familiar face around Elsinore Raceway and also at the tr op hy booth. IRWINDALE, CAL., NOV. 7 Irwi ndale has been featuring several consisten t winners this season in the Pro classes with .J e ff Vidic (Mail, Dave Taylor (Yam), Gary Denton (Han), Va l Tamietti (Mai) , J eff J en n ings (Bul) and Bill Rubly (Mai) coming o ut on top just abo ut every Friday night. Vidic redeemed himsel f in th e 250 Pro class this ti me after taking second last week, breaking an eigh t-week string of wins. David Taylor roc ke ted o ff th e start of the first 12 5 Pro race and stretched his lead on Gary Den ton to about 10 bike lengths at the end of the mota . The next mota turn ed a u t to be working against Tay lor and Den ton when the two co lli ded in th e first turn and went down. Eddie Clark (Han) took advan tag e of th e situatio n an d pulled we ll ahead o f sec o nd -plac e finisher Pat Nash (K&G). T he crash reall y did n't co un t fo r much, though, when Tay lo r wa s fin ished with the third mo ta , he had ye t anot her overall win in his pocket. Dave also to ok ho me th e $25 for winning th e King of the Hill race as we ll as t he 125 Pro m oney. The b es t race of the ni ght between Vidic and Tamietti came in the second mo ta of the 250 Pro class. Vidic, th e " Rabbit," got the ho leshot by a small margin over Val and he had to fight to keep the charging Maic o rider back. Tamie tti won the race a few feet ahe ad of Vidic who co uldn 't believe wh at had happened. " Roc ket " Rex St at en showed up on an RM2 50 Suzu ki for th e second week in a row and wen t au t to give the locals so me exercise . He just couldn't get the necessary tractio n o ff the line and repeatedl y go t poor starts. In the heated second mo ta , St aten go t off t he line in th ird to last position and worked his way up to third . St at en to o k th ird ove ral l and Vidic wo n aga in wi th T amietti seco nd fo r the n ight. He finished the last mo ta behind Vidic and lost the overall by o ne poin t. Jeff Jennings reall y berserked it in the Open class as he cam e flying farther and ha rde r th an an yb ody else and did some pretty de cent wh eelies d own the back straight to win th e first an d last mo to s while Val Tamietti took over the sec o nd race due to Jennings ' p oor sta rt. Bill Rubly (Mai) was Mr. Cons istency , taking three seconds and second overall. Don (Han) was t he leader by quite a margin in the first mot a of the 125 Ama te urs. The real race was be tween Jack Smith and Ro bb ie Loomis for second place. J ac k hel d second to the finish behind Acker. Bo th Smith and Lo omis wer e Yamah a-mounted. In th e second mota, t he ri ders n eeded to be hog-ti ed th ey were so anxious to get underway. Mack, the st ar te r , th reatene d to put more than one rider ba ck o n th e ju mp because of th eir eagerness. The rid ers ju mp ed th e start an d af t er one lap, th e race was call ed to a h alt. When every thin g finally got underway, it was 18-year-old Glen R e e s out front. Rees led only o ne hip , then Acker got by for the front spot. Laps two an d three were Acker's but as the final lap came to a close it was Rob bie Loomis first, Re es second and Clifford Math ews third. 1 guess Don pu shed a little too hard and di dn't make it to the che ckered. Ac k er was back for the last mota , an d ro de lik e his usual sel f to take the win . Corona 's Kirk J ohnso n had his wo rk cut out fo r him in the Mini Novice class. Bobby Garabedian (Yam) was o ff th e line and out fr ont in lap o ne of the firs t mota, bu t after that it was all J ohnson's . Bob by ' was second an d Eu gene Bro wn was third.
