Robert Hannah ap peared on a DG -p r c p p e d Yam ah a in place o f his R;\l mounts and ki nda luc ked o ut for th e win in th e 25 0 Pro ba t tl e. Hannah go t tied up in tr affi c in t he first m ot a and only man aged a fifth, whi ch really put hi m ou t of position of the top spot , bu t th in gs went h is way in th e second mota as the top tw o finishers in the first round. Bill Rubl y an d Richee Collins, had their pro blems. Both Bill. an d Rich ee failed to finish in th e top three, while Ha nnah wo n it. Richee Collins, a fte r p ulling th e start in th e firs t mota and grabbing a second at th e finish j u st co uld n't get it together for mota two. Well, Hannah won th e bucks with his five-o ne score whil e co nsisten t J eff Vidic finishe d the day with a three-three ride for second and Davy Carls on go t his Maico into th e top three with a six-two pe rfo rmance after giving Hannah a good ra ce for fir st in th e secon d m oto. . The DG race team was well represent ed at th e sta rt of th e first 125 Pro m a lo. as Gary Denton and Bra e Glover gra bbed th e top two slo ts. So on F;\IF'er Warren Reid tuo k the lead but he snapped th e cha in. Mike Bcll mo ved h is Hon da to fir st with ano the r 1';\11' racer , Dave William s' seco nd but Dave is then forced to drop out d u e to mi nor machi ne p rob lem s. LaPorte was really cr an king on his franks bike, going away and hiding in th e second mota with Reid ba ck in sec o nd. There was no catching LaPorte as he h ad th e 125 Pro class wrapped up. Whaley cleans up SDTR trials By Pete Pagel BARONA, CAL., NOV . 2 Marland Whaley (Hon) won the San Diego Trials Riders' ATA Trial at the Barona Indian Reservation, topping a field of 25 Experts by nine points over second-place Andre Plouffe (Bul). Whaley dropped o nly two points per loop in a tri al t hat was desc ribed as less difficult th an previous ones. Plouffe. whose 15-point total was good for second by only one point; was heard to mutter aft er the fin ish "I beat Bernie ... I beat Bernie. " Not bv m uch th ough , for Sch reiber (Bul) was one o f fo ur ride rs knotted to gether at 16 poin ts. After the number of cleans were totaled, Bernie took third, Mark Eggar (Ha n ) fourth , Mike Griffitts (Man) fifth and Ron Busch sixt h . Busch came down from Nevada to rid e this one. If an awar d were given for most spe ctacular fall , it would go to Ron Doster for his a tt em p t at section eight. That section was an uphill, rocky ravine with a right turn exit. He los t control at the tum and fcll in to the ravine with the bike on top o f him, engine screaming. Spectators pulled th e bike off him and Doster, unhurt , co nt inue d . A little sh ak en, h e lost 16 points on the first loop, but came back to drop only one on th e second, th e best one-loop score of thc da y. Ron ended up ninth. Gre g Carter (Ma n ) just recently 'transferred to Amateur and has won the last two events, including this o ne . Greg lost 17 points while second-place Scott Parker, a speedway racer, dropped 25. Givin g up only six points, Charles Bassett (Bul) swept the Novice class . Bassett is a newcomer to trials and bears watching in the fu ture. Another Bultaco rider, Th omas McKnight, wa s only two p oints behind Bassett. The sections were a littl e easy for th e top Nov ices, but just abo u t right fo r the majori ty. The San Diego Trial Riders scheduled a n ea rly cu to ff tim e a n d the rid ers were ha ppy to get home early . • Results ran last week.
