From "th e Open Expert class, Bill Thornbur g o n a 400 Husq varna took third . Tho rn burg was fifth at th e end of the first loop. He passed Rick Finger and Gary Cogbill during t he last loop. On e hundr ed thirty-five riders were in a two-line start with Am ateurs and Experts in the first line st arting at 9: 30 and the Novices from the second line moments later. Ninety-ei ght rid ers finish ed the first lo op before the winners st arted arrivin g at the finish o f the second. Riders reported lots o f dust , deep " sand, two major washes of abo ut eight-mile lengths where evil ro cks lurked beneath deep sand and speeds of 70 mp h were obtained. The less evil of th e two washes was Coyote, the evil one being called Cuy amaca, I believe. Five riders had injuries, one was evacuated by helicopter. A challengi ng race in an ex cep t io nally scenic area. the co urse included ro ck y terrain in foothills .
