Gary Vanderpool lappod tho pack twice on h is way to a lone ride in tho Open class. Rick Hocking teamed with Dave Murre ll to lap tho 250 pack and Jack Jonsen teamed up with miniblker Ji mbo Filice and nipped tho 125 class. Mike Sprenger topped Rick Delong in m ini-Marathons. A goo d battle d eveloped between arc h riv als Mik e Sprenger and Rick Delong. Delong worked past tho early lea d in g Honda rider but a st all forced th o Yamaha ace t o work harder, Delong is still th e fa s te st o f tho mini-MXers but Spr en ger is no slouch . Delong tied up his chain in a few knots and it co st him the win. Jack J enson a nd Jimbo Filice led all th e im portan t laps in a super ride o n a now RM 125 Suzuki out of Jensen Cycles. J ack, a long standing Expert, was in go od shape and within 15 la ps, had lap p ed up to tho third place rid er. J imbo, an Ex p ort minibiker at 12, had so me cra sh ing pro ble rns . Tho co m bin ation of a chain lo ss, fouled p lug and lack o f gas dropped them to se cond fo r part of the race but b y lap 3 7 of 46 , th e Suzuki was ba c k in con tr o l and on its way to a 30 second win. Rick Ho c kin g was out for a fun ride, trying to keep in shape ov er th e win tor months. Ho ckin g, o n a RM 250 Suzy ex cept for th o first lap, was never head ed in t ho 5 1 lap race. He won over Jo hn Silv a and Ti m Navarro by a lap , with some help from Dave Murrell. Only 15 t eams were invo lved in the . Open class. Hart and Koss led tho pack out on a Yarnrnie and Gary Va nderpool co oled it o n th e opening laps. Bill Risner wa s in th ird and di cin g. On lap seven Vanderpool vaulted the Sonny Ken yon Pursang into tho load and it was al l over from that point. At 5 5 laps, a record for th at co u rse , he had two on everyone with J ack Jensen returning for second o n the same RM 125 a nd Risner in fo r the third. • Re sults in Results Section. _ . ~ 00 ~ o ..0 8 o :> o Z Figone tops Woodland opener By Liz Swanson WOODL AND, WASH. , OCT. 18 Honda mo unted Vince Figon e seemed to be the only rider getting it all toge ther at the Wood land Winter Scram ble opener . Taking th o 125 trophy dash, it appeared no one co uld touch Figone's Elsinore . Fate had it s way in the 125 A Main. Figone had to really push his Honda to stay o u t of the way of Kevin Bass' Yamaha. Hitting so me rough bumps, he forfeited the lead to Bass on the last few laps. Figone m ade up for his second pl ace 125 trophy b y taking a first overall in the 200 class, which was run moto style. The 25 0 Main was a start to finish win for Dave Mazour. Trophy dash winner Eric Swanson (Bul) was m a k in g his way up from fifth dodgi ng fallen bikes and riders. He passed the second place ' rider and was well on his way to the lead. Attempting to pass o n t he last lap, he hi gh sided over Mazour's rear wheel leavin!; the trophies to Dave Mazour (Hon), Mark Powell (Bul) a nd Scott Sagar (Hus).
