When WSRA advertised a new course riders thought that they migh t get a ch ance to bre athe while racing, but no way! The track was berm to berm whoops and rough all the way. Even under the toughest co nditions so me riders shi ne . Richard Buttner (Yam ) took home the lion 's share of the semi -pro purse . Taking the win in the 250 and Open Expert classes, Buttner made it look easy. Jero me White (Hus), an Old Ti mer and J unior rider, won th e Old Timers cla ss, Op en J un io r and was th ird in t he 125 J un ior . Six pun ish ing m ot os, we ll ridden by a man who is at an age that is commo nly re ferr ed to as ove r the hill. Everyone h ad a fun day. Some of the t op desert aces were racin g, Fred Rogers (Hus) , Darrell Brown (Hon th umpe r) and Lonnie Murphy (Hus), but none of them placed too well. CMC MX J ack Martin, State Division II Champ for '7 5. By Sallee Hilton HELVETIA PARK, CAL. , OCT. 5 The National Motorcycle Patrol can add a lo t of new equipment to their stock, thanks to B.O.S.S. MX and the 4 00 riders who showed up to rid e the even t as an ove rdue "Thank yo u NMP." Ph il Crane (lIon), Brian Jodry (Mon) and Te d Rogers (Hus) we re the big m oney wi nners in the Expert classes, bu t the NMP was th e really big wi nner of t he da y . Patro l me mbers showed up in force . First aid and res cue service was so available that a guy co uld hardl y st ub his toe without being surrounded b y the red shirred patrolists eager to tend the injury! As a spe cial event, patro l members had their own m o to . The men, women and their kids , racers or not, all rode to gether for a very interestin g race, spiced up by one rider who gave the distinct impression that he (o r maybe she) was new to the game . Instead of t he traditional leathers, MX jersey, goggles, etc., this one wore a gorilla costume which was great entertainment. Winners in all classes co llec ted co nt ingenc y prizes donated by 17 shops and individuals paying their respects to NMP. The first 125 Expert moto winner was Pat Wilson (Hon) , who had come up from a mid-pack start to take the lead fro m AI Hall (Hon). Hall fought for his lead position for seve n laps before .giving in to Wilson. Kevi n Henry (Bul) was als o o n the move , but a crash put him back to fifth . The second moto was a whole new world . Wilso n took th e lead and the n crashed. Off an d running again, he had 19 riders in fro nt of him and o nly enough tim e to pick off I I before the checkered flag dro pped for Phil Cra ne (Han) . Henry had been moving up on Crane all alo ng, an d was righ t on his tail for second. Brian J odry had both 250 mo t os sewed u p , wire to wire. Lee t won th e first mo to, with Ted Rogers chasing h im all the way. Lodi-far out rough scrambles By An n Ca rr LOD! , CAL., OCT. 12 The Lodi Motorcycle Club pro· m oted its first rough scrambles since last winter, and riders walked through the pits after practice with mud-spattered grins and a twinkle in their eyes. Th e o ne-hal f mile course had taken them through the infield of the reg ular co urse , up the escape ramp, through the goo ne ar the railroad tracks, up and down the bank three times, and finis hed u p wai ling through t he p its around the signup boo th . Ro bert Sto ckd ale chall enged both front runners and t ook a tight second in a race where a mis t ake by any rider wo uld have du m ped everyone. - NOBCAL SPImJD\VAT Martin takes speedway honors Hanford's Jack Martin emerged as the State Divisi on II Ch am pion with a perfect performance in this year 's conclusion of speedway racing at the Kings Co unty Fairgrounds. Martin became the first Central Valley rider to take a state cro... n since World v War 11, according to promoter Le Roy Miller. "J ac k's victory was especially sweet for more than one reason. Not only is he the first successful Valley rider since the 40's, but he was ru nning against the most successful Divisio n 11 riders in the state and J ac k is just co mpleting his first year on the speedway circuit," said Miller.
