Matthcisen go t under Wilkes on th e flag p ole berm , Wilkes went by him through the cree k, and Mattheisen re-passed Wilkes coming off the big jump with a d istance jump that must hav e broken all re cords. As the rain p oured do wn o n th e outside, sp ec tato rs j ammed the Benton County Fairgr ounds' Co w Bam but on th is evening the bulls and co ws in th e pens were Bultaco s and Kawasakis and th e 4-H Club roster read Brad Hurst , Jack - Heeter, Lester Hu ey and Dave Howard. The track is abo u t 100 yards aro und and th e su rf ace is a m ixture o f clay , granite and saw d ust mixed with so me so rt of o di fero us organic matter . Th e su rface was primo for racing but face sh ields were definitely r ecommended. Te ch in specti on included sound tests and a check for ex cessive sm oke. McCormick d id n' t have en ough problems with Nelson, he soon found him sel f bulldozed out of second by Scott Miller (Ho d) and then bumped ba ck to fourth by Kawasaki-mounted J e ff Celorie, Not satisfied with his 100cc w in, Nel so n cam e back in the 12 5 class with wha t has to be the trickest Puch in the whole wide world, set up just like a speed way bike, Bill McCormick grabbed the holeshot off t he rubber band start in the 200 class and it looked like he had a runaway win until Doug McWilliams stuffed his super s anitary Champion/Bultaco under Bill's front wheel and sent him wide in the marbles. Re covering, Bill again found himself in trouble under the pressure of Mike Pier ce (Bul ) and Warren Bolton who finished two, three with McCormick fo urth. Brad Hurst (CZ) and J ack Heeter riding one of Mark Williams' Triumph singles played the "Concentration Game " watching th e rubber band on the starting line and when starter Rob Muzzy pressed the launch button Brad was the first to see the band disappear.
