Most riders were Experts and if they wer en't, they were high point Juni ors and wh at a time th ey had. Three riders transfered directly from each he at, the rest went to the semis with three tr ansfering again . Sign in started off a bit confused, the booth ca ught fire fo r o ne th ing, but on ce that was over things went quickly. One loo k at the tr ack had several of District 37's finest gearing up and hoping they would ge t enough practice to learn the way ar ound. In the 100 class Don Ho ward (Su z) ca ught my eye in a dice with Brian Go osen. Doug Chandler took a tumble in the semi, but re-joined the fray. The main was Doyle Sewell 's fr om start to fin ish. Yamaha-mounted, he t ook th e lead with Bob Merriott and Darrin Pritchett really turning it on behind him. I n the 125 's, Charlie Summers (Yam ) shot into the lead first heat, but th ere was a re-start when 0-37 rider David Jenkins tangled with an oth er, and went do wn in tum one. Jenkins went home with a spiral leg fra ctu re but fel t better when his buddy Charlie took home the trophy for the class. The first heat was a I?ip, but Summer won it. Ga ry Clark (Suz) took the seond he at with a huge lead after Wayne Rainey slid out while in second and got off. Derek Land won the third. The main was wild an d also scary as T ula re lived up ~o its repu t at ion as a tr ack fo r hard crashes. Off the line it was obvious it was to be a battle between De rek Land, Gary Clark and Charlie Sum me rs all on Yarnahas, Wayne Rain ey ano t her terror from District 37 blew an engine befo re he co uld get in to the real war. It was Clark leading with Su mmers next and right on him , La nd. The racing was out-a-sight! Land finally got b y and Summers tucked in behind the t\VO northerners, content to sit and wait. Coming onto the straight the two leaders came to gether with the expected results. Summers managed t o miss the flying was bikes and riders. The race im m ed iat ely called , both riders we re up on their fe et and walked away. 100cc heat action compliments of Johnny Alexander (5 1J I and Bob Merriot /99xl, In the 250, Mike Tidwell ca me up to sec o nd from de ad last in his he at. Derek Land didn't le t his previous ge t-off bother him and won th e second he at . Steve Fortune (Bul) took a th ird after nearl y m issing the ju m p. Earl y le ader Mike T idwell was having bike problems, lost a gear, and shot off tum one. He go t back o n in de ad last. TIm Smi thpeters was leading and Derek Land went to work to pass h im , with Jeff Eide right with them. Then it was Land , Sm ithpeters, and Steve Fortune in th ird. Fortune went down right befo re the jump, in fron t of the pack, but everybody missed everybody else in the shuffle and the race roared on. Eddie Beeson had worked up to fourth ahead of AI Glover an d as the flag came down it was Mike Tidwell, sixth. 200 class winner Britt Davis showed his p oten tial by winning his heat while second p lace man Richie Wolk did the same ' thing. Candidate fo r the Announcers Trophy should have been Larry Bird, who fo r the sheer hell o f it , a an d for f un racing e a mpa igned stock T rium ph Cub. The 500 m am was good, but there was never any question that it was n 't uT·Bone 's" race. Don Grigsby got out in front and just cr uised along up there. Foe Brown (Yam ) held second for a while th en missed the jump which moved him back a bit. Paul J ohnson (BuI) was always in contention and never lost his second spot once he took over . For all their sheer size the Open class wasn't a s spe ctacular in their racin g as the in-fighting two-strokes on the track. Rick Zi mmerman's Harley ploughs furrows on the straight when he turns it on, but Zimmerman treats it like a foo foo. Jim Wright was riding his half-miler (n o front brake!) so that's maybe why it went so fast. He won his heat and the main. Zimmerman was really hauling in second for a while but troubles with the b ike forced him into taking a more conservative speed and the first one to ge t hi m was John Tavis (Tri), then up moved Lee Seidel on a Beezer and Can Laine on another Triumph, The announcer's trophy went to Derek Land for continuing on and winning the 250cc main after his bad crash earlier. The biggest trop hy, donated by Clyde Reese and J ac k Froelich of District 37, is to go to the District with the highest number of points. Reese wanted it given to the Distric t who wo n the most trophies, but it was anno unced that the tro phy would be drawn for by the other winners at the en d of the evening. Beca use of t he work invo lved after the races it wa sn ' t awarded. Ho pefully t he T ulare Trackmasters will notify Cycle News as to who won it, and if it is out of the Dist ri ct arrange for it to be delivered. • It 's a whopper! Little David Jenkins was awarded a fracture fo r his efforts at " c rash city ." The redesigned 1-7/10 mile track at Medford's Motocross Park is not only interesting but very difficult, and in a co uple of pl aces , dangerous if someone fo rgets to play it co ol.
