Ridge Runners .wrap up a winner By Gerry Reagan WATSONVILLE , CAL., OCT. 12 Rain the week before left the track in perfect co n dition as the riders lined up for another Rid ge Runners motocross. Th e first race • co mbined the 100s an d Powder Puffs. Sm aller bikes had so me troub le o n the m uddie r sectio ns of th e track, but de te rm ined looks on th e faces o f rid ers made it clear that t he re are so me fu tu re st ars in this class. Jim Lesniewki (Yam) held on to sec o nd while Steve Bargiacchi (Hus ) fought his way from the rear of the p ack to grab third. In the second moto Marquez got the holeshot again and proceeded to steam away. Lesniewki was in second again but dropped out after three laps. Meanwhile, back in the pack, Mike Preston (N og] and Steve Bargiacchi were moving up. Preston led the way, both picking off a rider per lap and on the last lap, moved to within striking distance of Marquez. Mike Amaral (Hon) , who moved back to fourth when Preston and Bargiacchi went by, was not letting anybody get away. When they went by the checkered it was wheel to wheel. Another 50 feet and anyone of them could have won it . Ron Hu ffman (C-A) too k the lead in the firs t m o t o of 25 0 Ex per ts, but at the halfway poin t, Ron Self (Hus) m oved u p to take ove r . Brian J o dry (Han) crashed on th e third lap and dropped b ack to seventh. lie was up an d goi ng agai n, pi cking riders off, moving to third hy the end of th e moto . Sel f, who had built up a five second lead over Hu ffman, slowe d on the last tum to lo o k hack and Huffman almost picked him off at the checkered in a great pho to finish. J odry wa sn't pl aying ca tch up this time as he took th e lead at th e start and held it w ire to wire. Huffman moved in to second and with o nly three laps to go, Ron Sel f was right behind. Self had go tten a bad st art and then crashed on the fourth lap. He go t go ing agai n , took a couple o f lap s to sort himself out, and then m ade his move . He got by Huffman with only one lap to go and moved into second but was unable to catch up with Jodry by th e en d of the moto. In the fir st 25 0 Amat eu r moto Alan Ro hrer (Suz ) took the win , b ut the real battle was for second. Barry Krikorian (Bul) held sec o n d for most of the race but on the last lap Frank Kuhr (Ha n) go t by. Krikorian regained sec o nd but with tw o tu rns left , Kuhr edged by agai n fo r a second place finis h . Dennis Staplet on (Bu l) t oo k the second moto lead b ut Rohrer moved u p to ta ke it away afte r four laps. Meanwhile, Ed Mum m (Mo n) wh o had finis hed fo urth . in th e first moto , was moving up, and on th e.last lap caught up wi th Rohrer. Coming ove r the jump Rohrer go t sq uirrely- and" crashed giving the win to Mumm. Ro hre r was ab le to pic k up th e pieces and hang o n to sec ond. In both motos of the" Open Expert Gary Murphy (Hus) go t the holeshot with Ron Self (Suz) not far behind. Self followed Murphy throughout, passing him on the last couple of laps of both races. The Op en Am ateur race, was run at the same time as the Experts. John Swan (Suz) led both motos from start to finish. Thorn Green (Mai) used two thirds to ' take second overall and Paul Marino (Mail was third. The next Ridge Runners race will be December 14, the third annual Half-Fast Mud-o-Cross. •
