The tw o-time na ti onal champio n an d younger brother of defending No . One, Steve Bast, got both ends of th e p rogram, winning all three of his Scratch '"' Q) ..0 o ... u o rides and takin g two o f his three Handicap even ts. In the Han d icap heats, co m ing from th e 40, Mik e was flying , soo n caug h t an d passed ze ro-yard er Brad Newell, the earl y leader. . The Handicap Semi was the only time this night th at Mike lost a race . Sh aw go t the good d rive an d went on to win with Bast second and Bobby Schwar t z third , puttin g th em in to the Main. Fro m th e o ther Semi ca me Jim Fish back, Mike Konl e and Bill Cody . Schwar t z , howe ver , cra shed d ur ing Scra tc h racing and was unable to make th e call at the sta rt of the Handi cap Main, That left traffi c a bit less cr owded for Mike to co me th ro ug h an d h e di d, along with Cody , to take firs t with Bill second and Fishback th ird . In Sc ratch ra ci ng , it was all Mike Bast as he wo n his h ea t defeating Mike Cu roso , to pped his Semi over Cod y , Fishback and Sco tt Sivadge , and then to ok the Main aga ins t Ric k Woods, Curoso and Co d y. That Main was an exceedingly close o ne throughout . Woods got the lead ea rly then Bast and he exchanged it while Curo so wa s no more than six o r eigh t fee t behind th em. The Ma tch Race was to h ave been betw een Ber t Harkin s and Larry Sh aw, bu t a co n trac t agreemen t kep t t he speedy Sco t o ut o f town for a week . Cody went in his place and Sh aw grabbed th e lead in the final turn o f a very close rac e. Division II rider s qualified for their track cham pio nship here nex t week. Winning their heats and th ereby movin g in to th e title contender were Jan Ballar d, Leo Black , Gene Woods, Robin Hood, Fred Sidner an d Steve Hein. MITCH MAYES Team Husqvarna's Mitch Mayes led a Pennzoil sweep as. he ran away wi th the 500cc class ti tle at the SCORE AC-Delco World Championship Off-road Race and had the fastest time of the ent ire event. Nutter owns a bi ke sh o p in Santa Monica called "Speedway Only," the same sh op that Sc ott Sivadge rides out of. Scott won the Scratch Main Friday with Jim Fishback right there for second. Big Jim Fishback, the desert ace, ran awa y with the Handicap Main that ended up in a fight on the track when Mike Muntean ran into Steve Bast after the checkered flag~This was 100 percent acciden t. There had be en two restarts of the Handicap Main because of rollers or guys trying to beat the starting gate. T his burns up a lot of fuel and by the last lap Mike Muntean had run out. He had no power left to slide it around after the flag causing hi m to run into Steve Bast. Steve was flat on his back when his brother Mike, overcome by a lot of rough riding during the night by Muntean, took things in his own hands. He crashed trying to miss running over his brother, got up and leaped on . Muntean who had not gotten to his feet. The whole poor show will be dealt with by the S.R.A . board.
