Don Bailey, latest of the Boss riders rode by Steve Carrillo and Rocky Malynn for the big class 360 Expert win, wh ile Yamaha World/Boss Randy Mamola continued his climb up the high point ladder with a win in the 250 Expert class over Bailey and Mike Delacy. Mamola took over third place in the overall count in front of Steve Eklund but still a little shy of Rick Delacy and Mike Faria. In the b attle for other high point trophies, Tony Adragna still has the big lead in the 125 Novice class but it was Greg Stocking nipping out Dave Cascio on the last lap for the win with Tim Sy kes third keeping Adragna from the two points he needs to turn Junior. Erroll Longboya only needs seven points in the next two races to capture the 360 Junior class and if he can keep serious enough. he will just do that, having won tonight's battle with ease over Hank Rivera on the ex-Erv Kanemoto Kawasaki. Paul Austin needs only a few points in the 250 Junior and Jeff Buckner and Scott Garcia are at it tooth and nail in the 175 Novice. A rejuvenated 100 Novice class saw Chuck Harrell III take the big win from Kurt Jeffcoat after Rod Shrum led the early laps. Shrum is the only rider to have a chance to catch Wayne Thompson for the high point award. • Results in Results Section. Smoking off the line for the lead in the first heat was Mike Simning (Kaw) on his Animal 750, followed closely by Lipanovich on the Suzuki and Paul Ritter on a 750 Ducati, Th is trio held the lead for the first 35 miles, with th e war between Simning and Lipanovich being waged over inches. Pat Hennen pushed his Cycles Unlimited 350 Yamaha into fourth. (Before the race Hennen's co -rider Phil Frank had said that the bike wasn't going very fast in practice and that he and Hennen were going to take it easy breaking in for Ontario.) Hennen grabbed second place for a few laps when Ritter and Simning pitted, but Simning regained second when Frank took over for Hennen. A crash by Mush Emmons on the Ritter/Emmons Ducati retired them for the day , and Simning jus t clung to second having been slowed by a crash and his Kaw's drinking problem (the . triple required two stops for gas) . The second heat started the way the first had ended: Lipanovich, Simning, Hennen . Too much time in the pits with his ailing Kaw dropped Simning way back, though , and Hennen's Yamaha seized just as he was challenging for the lead. With those two out of the way Marty Siegel ro ared home un contested. The 50 0 Honda of Fred Koren and Tom Chew finished second in the heat and second overall. Greg Goodman 's 350 Honda four finished third overall, and Jim HaberIin was fourth on a 750 Triumph. Unfortunately for the rest of the "Sears Point 200" field, it ran like the Osaka Express. Siegel and Lipanovich steered the Ron Grant Racing Specialties sponsored bike to first in both heats of the AFM-Sears Point season finale . Th e race was a 250, 350, 500, and 750 combined production affair, an d with two-strokes, four-strokes, singles, twins, triples, and fours pitting at different times, traveling at different speeds, changing riders, and crashing, it was as confusing as this sentence. One thing was obvious from the start - the big bore bikes weren 't going to run off and hide. HELVETIA PARK, CAL., SEPT. 21 distance between himself and the next three riders - Phil Crane (Yam), Danny Montgomery (Han) and Robert Norton (Han). The four stuck together like glue the whole first lap. In the second lap Norton saw an opening and in one burst went by Montgomery and Crane. Hersman started gaini ng a little space and the group stretched out some. At the halfway mark Norton turned it on again and got past Hersman while Crane moved up closer, and again they were running almost three abreast. After the white flag, Crane was suddenly missing from the fran t runners and AI Hall (Han) had moved into third behind Norton and Hersman. The second mota was just as tight, with the top three finishers of the first mota all determined to win . Hersman immediately took the lead, Norton and Hal l behind him.
