The track at Mt, View Cycle Park was just super all through the first motos. Then the predicted rain came and turned everything into slop. Today's race was the last of the summer series and found many of those present 'adding a cushion to their point lead . Billy Parker (Hon) has led t he Minis throughout the summer and added another win today. David Cooper (Yam) led all the way in the first moto but he an d Billy exchanged positions for the second round. Cole Chancellor (Pen) took the 100 Junior win with two seconds beating out his series-winning brother, Vint, Vin t had a spill in the first race and came in fifth . He returned to win the final moto, Leonard Trujillo (Suz) won the first round but fell victim to the mud in the next. 26 Jim Turner and Mark Sun provided the show in the 125 Intennediates. Mark was out in front all the way in the first race with Jim just waiting for a mistake. Round two was a replay un til the middle of the race when Jim slipped by. The first 125 Pro found Steve Phillips (Hon) leading a tight pack for four laps. Ron Sun (Yam) was off the line second but goofed his way back to seventh. From there he blasted through to take the lead in the fifth lap. In the second race it was Phillips, Mike Kinnear (Hus) and Sun out first. By the second lap Ron and Mike got o ut front to begin a 30 minute battle. In the next to last lap they approached a tum and another rider almost side by side. Mike got by, but the lapped ri der went down and took Ro n with him. Ro n 's bike required a push to the pits for quick fixings before he could continue to a sixth. Kevin Jansen finished second in this round. He was in second in the first race when the fire went out in his Honda and the race was over before he discovered an unplugged wire. All the Pro races were affected by mechanical problems. Barney Newman led the first 250 Pro moto until his Husky started gasping for power. Kirk Williams (Suz) moved up to the lead. When the rains settled in for the second race Kirk really 'came alive and rode away from everyone. Newman rode a Maico out front in the first moto of the Open Pros while Kirk worked up from a late start to move into second before his chain broke. Williams ate up the muddy second m oto again and Newman rode behind hi m until his kill button drowned. Ron Long (Hus) took the overall with three-two finishes ahead of Vernon Gabbert (Hon) . with a two-three. The Turkey class was the only group who encountered much more than a sloppy bath in the second race. Some of these guys were in real trouble with their worn tires, etc. as the mud deepened. Dwight Lind (Suz ) won a nice hunk of brass for his first race. He was very enthusiastic but admittedly preferred the dry first moto to the sloppy second round. • Results in Results Section. Team speedway By Mi ke Davis COLO. SPRINGS, COLO. , SEPT. 26 For the second week in a row the Colorado Cougars defeated the Golden State Grizzlies by th e identical score of 40 to 38 . This week the ever improving Cougars led most of the match but the Grizzlies were in it through the final heat. The season-long battle in the I25cc Novice class between Scott Thompson (Hon), and Rich Dennody (Yam ) continued with Thompson taking the win over Dennody for a close finish. The 360 Am ateur class saw Perry Smith (Hon) leading the pack until fuel lin e problems developed, then Reno's Tony Evans (Bul) quickly took the lead. They had a double feature by running an Open class Semi-pro TT utilizing the front straightaway of the half-mile track with a kidney shaped infield and a jump. There was a shortage of Open class riders causing Novices and Experts to ri de for a co mbined class. Lee Voss (Suz) happily picked up that first place check for his two-four score . 250 Pro Rick Benek (Pen) passed first moto winner Rick Weidman (Hon) during lap three and finished out moto two in front to cash in.
