If so , he must have mixed up the results of his survey. Brad La ckey is our best motocrosser and has brough t a lot of class to the American m o t orcycle scene. J ust because there are a few class " C " riders that don't get their names in y our paper, they shouldn 't put down a top motocrosser like Brad . (For Mr. Buch ners' information, world 's m ost m o t o c r o s s is the demanding sport, n o t j ust another type of racing.] DANA HAGMAN , Pin ole , Calif. Does the industry care? I a m p e rp lex ed. b ew ildered, frustr ated and r ap i dl y ge t t m g sp ring-loaded in th e shafted positio n. T he M IA , bo th at t he national and d istrict level , has shown that it cares abo ut th e fut ure of off-ro ;d riding. Ron Burp o of DRA, throug h his efforts wit hthe BLM, h as shown t hat he cares. Russ S anford, through the efforts o f M.O . R.E ., has sh ow n that he cares. By their unanimous support of San Gabriel Val ley M.C 's effo rts to save the Barstow to Veg as, th e me mber clubs of D· 37 have shown tha t th ey care. My own club, the Anaheim Hi-Siders M C, spends at least one meeting per month wri ting letters and being, generally speaking, politically noisy an d ac t ive. So we care about the future of off-road ridin g, too . But, where arc th e manufacturers and distributors? Have these companies beco m e so callo us an d insen sit ive to the needs and desires of the co nsu mer public wh o su p po rts th em? Do th ey think th at when public lands for off-road riding are legislat ed o ut of existence, we wiII all tum meekly to th e stre e t a n d contin ue to buy their products ? Sure , these co m pani es belong to the M.1.C., a very wo rt h wh ile organi zat ion, but do they feel that upon paying their membership dues, they hav e abso lved themselves of fu rther responsibiliti es t o the people (I mean you and me) who make their profit statements possible? 1 think no t. Thin k abou t it manufacturers. We need y our help right now ! It 's time to st and up and be counted. GARY TWOMBLEY President Anaheim Hi-Siders M C You 're right, th e off-road batt le has been mostly a consu m er affa ir so f ar. Bu t how many of us have actually set pen to pap er and bugged the industry f or help ? MIC 's west coast address is 4100 Birch St ., Suite 101 , N ewport Beach, CA 92660 .. . Editor Get involved " Yo u must we ar a helmet," "Get all y ou r permits," " Ride in designated areas," " Yo u must h ave a Gre en Stickie, " etc. I'm sure: sick of "Big" government te lli ng me wh at I can and can't do on or off a motorcycle. 1 am a voting tax payer that for sure will be active in the next national and local governmen t elections. Even though I've attended only one desert race, I know th at b ikers have go ne to the desert to race or just to have fun on weekends and weekdays fo r as long as there has been mo t o rcycl es. Surprise - the de sert is still th ere , so are the p lants, natural habitats, etc. Strange isn't it? Maybe n ot so strange sin ce th e desert takes care of itself. The gov ernment got ti red of spending just tax mo ney to hassle t ax payers, so now t hey use money raised t hrough their new sources, and if you ride a mo torcycle in the desert, y ou know wh at their new so urces are , En closed is bu t a small chec k (fo r SGVMC) t o figh t, quoti ng Larry L a n gle y, " Gove rn m en t bure aucratic bullshit; " Also en clo sed is a chec k for Russ Sanfo rd o f M.O .R.E . Le t's all get toget he r and hel p, in whate ver way we can . I kn ow we can preserve the 1. Set up a separate " Legal T rust Fund" acco unt 2. Appoint an "Ad Hoc" committee to ad mi nister th ese funds 3 . Acknowledge all con tributio ns in writing 4 . Keep a separate led ger and book of re cords o n every dollar coming in and go ing out 5 . Send a mo nthly newletter to all co n trib ut o rs informing the m of progress. The reason for this careful watch on your dollars is two fo ld. We want to assure you th at it is being devoted strictly to this defense , nothing else; and if an yone, fri end or foe, wants to demand an audit we will be prepared to do so . If at the end of our neg otiations there are an y monies left, they wiII be transferred to a central legal fund for all clu bs to dr aw on. We have consulted with the newly formed District 37 " legal task force" and have co m e up with the following program: The appeal process will most likely take fro m two to four months to co m plete so it appears th at a 19 75 "Barstow to Las Ve gas" is history at this point. If we are successful , the chances fo r a 1976 "B to V" are excellent. The en try fee for this year 's race wo uld have had to be $24 to co ver all ex penses. We are ordering th e finisher medals and window decals an y way (t hey are su per bitchin as usual) and here is ho w yo u can ob ta in o ne of each. For an in dividual d onat ion of $25 or mo re yo u will receive, when available, a fin ish er medal and decal stating "can celled by environ mentalists " and your entry to our 19 76 race will be 5 0% paid for. We are gratefu lly accepting all donations whether they are $1 or $1,000 so this is no thing more than an effort to obtain the mo ney we desperatel y need and give y o u something in return to help justi fy your donatio n. We have already received so me individual do nati o ns and so me club donations, and have recei ved verbal commitments from others. We thank you all for yo ur confidence in u s and fo r your interest and financial help. Please keep it co mi ng so we can all "keep on doing it in th e dirt."
