Baron cuts off the competition By Hidden Images CARLSBAD, CAL., OCTOBER 5 Extensively using the art of "block-passing," Bru ce Baro n and his Sunsh ine Yamaha p ulled off th e 25 0 Pro class win at AMC's monthly trip to Carlsb ad Raceway . Dave Doss co llected the 500 class win for European Sport Cycles, while S teve Gerber hooked up the win in the small 125 Pro class. Can-Am mounted Mike Palhegyi grabbed the lead o n the first lap of the first 250 Pro go, heading the quick top five of Bruce Baron (Yam) , Loren Hall (CZ) , Scott Miller (Yam) , and Jeff Borden (Mai) . Baron stopped on the second lap to have his Carreras cleaned, but he soon caugh t and passed Hall to retake second spot. Miller slipped by Hall on th e fourth lap, while Borden DNF'd from a blown head gasket. Palhegyi appeared to have the whole scene wrapped up as Baron pitted one more time to put his goggles b ack on during the eigh th lap. Charging hard on the last lap , Baron flew past Palhegyi over the second jump, only to ca use a momentary tangle-up as he blocked out Palhegyi in the next corner. Baron came out of it in front as !\like was so tired that " I could hardly even hang on" Probably the oldest of the bunch was Ch uck Rouse (B us). wh a p u t his experience to good use as he outlasted the rest of the pack to finish third. At mid-point, Baron worked his way up to Palhegyi and squeezed past him over the famed Carlsbad " ledge," and then took off after Tamali. With three laps le ft in the rno to , Baron got up right behind Smith, passing him with the exact same blocking set-up as in Palhegyi 's case. Up and ove r the "Wall," Baron grabbed the extreme inside ~ line, cutting into Tamali's path, causing Smith to fall over. Baron lef t and paraded around for the overall. Palhegyi was able to catch on Tamali, getting by with a lap to go. Andy Bolander led the first 500 Pro mota to -first comer, but he got o n the gas too early and slid out, allowing Mike Foreman (Hus) to take over first.
