, Morehead failed to finish in th e top four in the heat but gained a transfer to th e Semi. TI,e second-year Expe rt th en cam e on strong to win th e Semi but was faced with a back ro w star t in th e fin al. It was two Harl eys and two Yamahas in th e Trop hy Dash bu t Berry co ntinue d to be the man of th e nigh t, wi nni ng h is firs t Dash ever, agai n turning in a smooth ride. , Aksland ran second, Lawwill th ird an d Han k Scott never got out of fourth . Berry, who used to be known as "Crash In t carry Berry , turned over a new leaf in the final and dominated the race from start to finish for his firs t Expert m ain event victory . Scott, Aksland and Morehead did the chasing in th e early laps with Morehead coming from deep in the back row to a contender spot ' in th e first lap. Scott dropped ou t of the race on the third lap with Mor eh ead moving up to second, Alli son to third, and Aks land dropping to fourth. At the end of 10 laps Lawwill was far b ack in last running position . Aksland regained second from Allison on the II th lap as Gennai pulled into the pits with mechanical tro ubles. On the 13th round Allison agai n tried to stuff his machine in to t he first tum too fast and slid out. Aksland held on to second with Morehead turning in an impressive third on his borrowed m achine. Lawwill started raci ng like , th e Mert of old the last five laps an d p icked off four pl aces to finish a fast clos ing fourth. Eddie Wirth en de d up fifth. Ted Boody , th e Michigan Junior who had his winning H-D clai med by J im Wrigh t last wee k, showed up looking fo r a ride. He fo un d one, it was Jinl Wright 's Yamah a! Ted was a challenger most of th e w ay, ta king a close third be hi n d Steve E klund and Pat Guthrie . Boody had seco n d wrapped up until the fin al tum wh en Guthrie came inside too h ot an d pinched him to th e wall, leavin g th e choice of backing off or going into the stands. Wright finished sixth. Boody cra she d in the main ev ent. At first it ap peared he was all righ t but it was later found th at he had go tten h is foot wedged under th e m achine. His steel shoe was ripped o ff , taking th e back of the boot and hi s heel as well. He was hospitalized from th e freak inju ry . Scott Pears on upset Ascot point leader , Dan McWhorte r in th e sec o nd heat and Pennsylvania 's Bill Pe te rs, sh o wing hot /lash es, finish ed fo urth. Pearson tri ed too hard on th e first lap of the fin al for h is first Asc o t win a n d w e nt b oun c in g d own th e backstretch. The race was st opped wi th Pears on ab le to make th e res tart, but not quite as eage r. McWhorter put it all to gether once again and scored the win on the night th at was also h is b irthday. Eklund gave up an y chance of a win when he stuffed his machine in to th e hay bales and the wall on lap seven . He passed early leader Brad Newell an d held back late drives by Bob Schwartz and Dubb Ferrell, who ended second and third .
