CRe Super Series MX By Christopher Ostlind VALENCI A, CAL. , SEPT. 2 1 Flagging o ff the first round of their Indian Dunes Super Series to day , th e CRC paid ou t some nice cash pu rses to Expert riders. 20 Eddie Cole p ock eted a cool $8 0 as he took the overall 25 0 Expert win. Cole turn ed in two very impressive rides , cranking o ff lead s of up to 14 seconds an d h eld it there , ' wi th con sisten t lap tim es. Stev e Miller : (Mai), Jim Tas sano (Mai) and Cliff Lett (Bul) spen t the day trading off sec ond, third and fourth. Tassan o 's las t moto third netted him seco n d ove rall with Miller and Le tt following. Tom Web b (Mai) , smooth and fast, to o k th e Op en Expe rt win with two first pl ace fin ishes. Th e Open Experts were co mbined, with th e 25 0 clas s usually lea din g, thanks to Mr. Cole. Ron Gibson, with h is firs t ' ride on a 360 Bult aco , cam e in second wh ile Bill Bryan (CZ) and Lee Evans (CZ ) filled out the paying positions. Th e reall y h ot racing cam e in the 125 classes wh ere over 85 riders contested the various divisions. The first 12 5 Expert moto had ' Honda rid ers Bob Jones and David Taylor setting a pace that the other riders could not keep up with. Taylor had the lead, but w ith so me fancy out-br aking, Jones got by him after four of the 12 lap s. Taylor then slack ed off a bit letting J on es op en up to a lead of abo ut six seconds. In lap eight Tayl or began putting the push on Jones, picking up ground rapidly , un til the next-to-last lap. He tried to pass Jon"'s; ran into him, and fell in the process, giving J ones an easy win , with Taylor taking second, and Andy Jannings (Hon) a distant third. In the second moto Jones and Taylor were Joined by Jannings, and Craig Cole (Yam), making for some very quick and exciting racing. They stayed close together for the early going, but Jones and his b ike began to show their superiority by steadily pulling away from' the field. The moto ended with J ones taking the win, easily, while Andy Jannings snagged second place in the rnoto , and overall, by beating David Taylor to the finish line. Taylor was followed closely by Craig Cole who picked up the fourth place money. The CRC Super Series will continue, over the next two weekends, at Indian Dunes' Shadow Glen course. Smith collects in RTMC MX By Mike Yada CARLSBAD, CAL., SEPT. 13 The Open Pro class at RTMC Carlsbad is just that - Open. John Smith, '. a n d his st one stock RM-I25, went home with the top mon ey , lucking out when Robert H an n ah dropped the chain o n his RM·370 in th e final lap s of the second mo~. ' Dave Gerig (Hus) took the race into the first comer, coming out of it in last place, bumping in to John Sm ith, as Smith tried to get under Gerig. Bob Hannah blasted into the lead on his potent 370 Suzuki with Terry Turner (Yam) and W.C . Thorton (Yam) following behind. Smith got up from his tangle in the first corner and berserked the the the be- tween the first four front runners. First position wasn 't decided until the last lap, but when the flag came out it was Jim Spe igle , Mitch Zehner and Strain, all righ t on each other's tails. Strain was the overall victor, Jim Speigle (Yam) garn ered second and Mitch Zehner (Yam) was third. TIm Hoole (Yam) was the first man to cross the finish, in the MX Special, in front of Eric Sermer (Suz). Sermer was , in third and made a mad dash for Charles Olive , p assing him on tile straigh taway. While Sermer and Olive were busy with their battle, Hoole moved way out fron t to take the checkered almost half-a-lap ahead of the motocross riders. Moto two was re-run after a mix-up in white and checkered flags , and this time Sermer bolted way
