" ....... .. . it was Fuller first with J im Vigil in seco nd and John Phelps in third. Overall Phelps cam e out on top with second going to J im Vigil and third place to Dave Fuller. Dan eeery blew the start in the first moto of the 250 Pros, but h e soon made up for it by going wi de in the first tum to pick up seve ral places and move into second behind Duane Joice (Yam). From th en on it was Geery on a new Honda, riding right on Joice 's rear wheel. Lap after lap Geery pressured until tw o laps from the finish Oeery pulled ah ead of Joice and went on to win the moto . Moto two and Joice pulled th e start on ce more with Geery not far behind. Oeery took several laps to get by Joice and from then on it was him all alone at the flag . Duane finished second and Chris Grewer (Hus) took third. Glenn Jennings (Hon) had the 12 5 Pro class pretty much to himself today with his only competition coming from Cliff Bagot (Yam) . Glenn won both motos after getting by Bagot in both races. • Resul ts pending. Cycleland Speedway By Donna Fowle r -CHICO , CAL., SEPT. 6 With only three point races left this season, the pace at Cycleland Speedway is quickening. The highligh t of this evening's program was - the 360cc Handicap event wh ich found Experts John Grant (Yam), Steve Dietz (Bul ), Lowell Moura! (BuI ), and Dick Turner (Yam), starting from the 60 yard handicap position; Shane Scott (Yam) starting from the 50 yard line; and way up front, Dick Hiatt (Bul) on th e zero, having transferred from the Scratch Main . Hiatt got a good start but was forced out early with m echanical problems. Steve Dietz gave up to the same fate several laps later. Moural, Gran t and Scott were putting on a real show swapping positions with each lap . Grant went in a little too hot and both Moural and Scott got un der him moving him back into third. All three riders were pushing hard in as exciting a race as we've seen this y ear. In the wh ite lap Scott m ade his move and forced Moural out of the narrow groove to take the checker by abo u t a wheel length . This win moves Scott back to th e 55 yard lin e, onl y five y ard s from the cove ted "Scratchman " position. Th e highest honor th at a rider can earn at Cycleland is the ti tle " Scra tch man ." Fischer, Gladman, top Castle Rock n By Liz Swanson CASTLE ROCK, WASH., SEPT . 6 It seem ed to be the nigh t for J on Gladman (Hon) and Je ff Fischer (Hon). Gladman won the 250cc Trophy Dash, bu t had to push to - 30 stay ou t of th e way of Eric Swanson (Bul) who came from fourth pl ace to finish in a close second. J eff Fischer won the 125cc Trophy Dash, but had competition in the Main from the nigh t 's other " big winner Gladman. Fischer and Gladman in a seesaw battle for first gave the crowd an exciting moment as they came fo r the checkered flag. Fisch er took it. The unbeatable Brett Barkman (Han) fin ally met his m atch . Vic tor Parrish (Yam) took a Trophy Dash win over Barkman , though the fac t that Barkman fell on the first lap h ad something to do F IRST PH OTO - Super-t rick pro t otype Grou p Se ven racing earth m over. ca ultot during shakedown at Jackson Co unty Cyde Park. We'll probably see the rubber band starts at the next Sequoia Riders promotion for ri ders responded favorably to the mechanical method. Bakersfield 's Robert Ely (Han ) grabbed the holeshot in th e Min i-Expert he at and was never he ad ed. Yamaha pilot Mich ael Yafchak finished second b u t h ad his hands full with Mike Garrison (Yam) in hot pursuit. In the Main , Garrison showed wh y he 's Num ero Un o as he took t he win, leadin g flag to flag . Rodney (Rocket) Sullivan bli tzed the rest of the p ack an d was closing on Garrison in the final lap, bu t Garrison's flawless rid ing kept Sullivan in second . Heat winner Robert Ely finished third. Mike Garrison (no rel ation to th e above) h ad th e 125cc J unior Main le ad bu t was promptly rel ieved of it by Kevin Oole y (Yam) who ease d to the inside of tum one. O ol e y went on to ta ke first while Garrison followed for second. Bob Hoffm an (Suz) brought ho me the third pl ace tr o phy . In th e 20 0cc Expert Main, Steve with it. Barkman made h is comeback in the Main doing wh a t he do es best . .. winning. 20 Occ action found Jeff Fisch er (Han) pressuring trophy dash winner Bruce Scott (Bul) . Scott, off in first , had to work to keep Fischer from passing him. Coming to the checkered flag in a photo finish , Scott captured the win by only a few inches. • Results in Results Section. Flowers Park rr By Sharon Bramlett WILLOW CREEK, CAL., AUG . 29 With riders working toward high point trophies, and o nly one more race in th is season 's series, racing was fast and furi ou s here Friday nigh t. Don Bramlett (Yam) managed to wrap up th e Mini high p o in t tro p hy for th e season , wi th a win in t he 80cc A·Mai n, while Kenny Nichols (Yam) who was tied with Bramlett at that time , lost out co mpletely when he crashed by the jump, losing his second place trop hy an d fai ling to p ic k up any po ints. The 100 Men's clas s was a clo se race throu~hout, between Matt Coleman (Yam) and L an c e Burgess (Han) . C o l eman managed to keep Burgess beh ind him , to take the trop hy das h , and heat race, but Burgess slipped by him to win th e Main . The 125 Expert class found Dennis Palm er on his YZ monoshoc k, riding a tigh t rac e w ith Denn is Axels on (Bul) righ t up to the last lap. with Axelson • co ming out vic torious. Construction begins on Jackson County Cycle"Park By Jerry Mathel MEDFORD, ORE., SEPT. 10 Giant earth movers and bulldozers began m oving dirt this week at the new J acks on Coun ty Cycl e Park , under cons truction at th e old Camp White Army Base located about 10 miles north o f Medford . When co m pleted the p ark will incl ude a hal f-m ile oval. a short tr ac k, a TT course , a motocross co urse, a Spe edway tr ack a nd spec ia lly des ig na ted motorcy cle pl ay areas. Completion of the entire projec t is exp ected to take p lace in various phases over th e next five years as fun ds are avai l able. The presen t p hase un der cons truc tion will include the hal f-m ile oval, sh o rt track and TT track with ligh ting faci li tie s fo r th e short track an d TT co ur se. Funding fo r th is first p hase came fro m various so urces. $2.000 was put up by th e Mo to rcycle Rid ers Associati on, a Medford club whi ch will operate th e tr ack, $4 ,000 by th e J ackson County Park Department, $6. 000 by the St ate of Oreg on and $ 12,0 00 in Federal Funds. Preparation and maintenance of the tr a ck surfa ce will be th e responsibility of MR A with the other permanent facilities being tak en care of by the Park Dep artment and leased to MRA for race even ts. When races are not in progress the track facilities will be open to th e public at a minimal use fee . On e of the uni q ue features being installed at the track is the lighting facilities which hav e been desi gned by Westinghouse. The en tire short track an d TT co urse will be lit by a singl e
