out too far in number four and Ayers was waiting. He took over third on the white lap and Nichlason was not ab le to gain b ac k. The A Main was the rac e to watc h. Randy Johnson came out on Dan a 's Triumph. Frank Word got his usu aly h ole s ho t followed closely by Mike Bran am and J eff Campbell. Those th ree made a lap before Branam was p assed by Campbell and the race was o n! Campbell turned it on and go t aro und Word , th en pulled a steady lead with his own distinctive style of riding. Tom Pappas worked h is way out of the back of the pack to a third, followed by • Branam. Results in Results Section. B.O.S.S. CMC Labor Day Grand Prix By Sallee Hilton DIXON, CAL., AUG. 31-SEPT. 1 Almost 600 riders turned out for this two day race at Argyll Park the Sportsman riders trying to win the Grand Prize motorcycle, and the Experts goin g for a $1250 purse. -- . 28 At the end of th e lust da y 's racin g an d the first two motes, there was a five-way tie for the lead among th e Sportsmen. With two firsts each, the contenders were : Greg Welch (Hon) 125 Novice Division II, James Hill (Ho n ) 125 Novice Division III , Doug Noell (Pen) 250 Novice Division II, Brady Farris (Mai) Open Intermediate, George Cheatham (Yam) Open Novice Division I. The second day and third mota eliminated two of the contenders. It was another easy win for Welch and Hill. Farris got another first too, but not so easily . Noell and Cheatham ran in first place for a while but each crashed before the mota was over" ending their hopes of winning. . In the fourth and IIDai mota, the adrenalin was flowing. Welch, Hill and Farris each went in with three wins, h ad their minds made up to take home that new bike. (The winner would h ave a choice of a 125 Husqvarna, a 125 Malco or a 125 Yamaha.) Each had a cheering section to rival the 4ger s or the Rams. We lch was up first, but this time finished in third place, giving him a total of six points for the four motos. Next contender, Hill , took another easy win and four points total. Farris had his work cu t out for him. He knew wh at he had to do and put all he had into his mota, but while battling it ou t wi th Chris Mattos (Hu s) for the winning spot, he overshot a berm and killed his engine. A be n t kic k starter slowed hi m down even more , and he fin ished eighth with an 11 point total. James Hill , a Bay Are a rider, wen t home with th e ne w Husky. Big mone y w inner among the Experts was Ted Rogers [Hus ], taking lust Open and fourth 25 0. In the Open Expert class Rogers led the pack start to fin ish in the first moto, but in each of th e others he did it the hard way. He had to work up from mid-pack starts, winning all four motos. . Alex Jorgensen (CA) cleaned up in the 250 Expert class winning all but the third mota which was a near photo finish with Brian Jodry (Man) and Bruce Hanlen (BuI) leading J orgy across the finish line. . ,125 Expert leaders swapped around so much, it was anybody's game. The end result was unpredictable, with two of the four mota winners not even finishing in overall paying positions. David Wood (Yam) won the first mota , but then finished three-five-eight to take second place cash. Mitch DeVaughn (Yam ) won the second moto after a seventh in the firs t then blew cashing in with a 12th and a DNF. The third moto winner, Mike Amaral (Han), took first overall placing three-two-one-three and fourth mota winner, Lon Wardell (Han), got it together too late to collec t on a p a y i ng spot wi t h previous 14- fo ur -nine fin ishes. • Puff race, which incidentally , w as a firs t fo r this particular tr ack, and turned in to an instant success with gals running around looking for mini bikes to beg, bo rr o w" or steal. Elaine Miller (Hon) t oo k a n e arl y l e a d a nd held it throughout the race, followed by Don a Bramlett on a borrowed Honda, who took lust in the Girls ' clas s. It was really a toss-up on wh ich was the be st viewing, Elkhead motocross By Lynne Diltz YONCALLA, ORE., SEPT. 7 Riders turned out 135 strong for this session of Elkhead MX. Nineteen 125 Nov ices left the line and al though the first 90 degree righ t caugh t many large classes n apping, this gro up made it to the lust big berm without a hitch. Karl Lee had a flyin ' start until a jam put him under three other bikes. Paramedics said possible broken ribs. Karl didn't ride but stayed around to watch. The second moto was another fran tic one with 17 ba ck on th e . line. Randy Duval finish ed both motos in first, followed by Jeff Stere with two seconds. . Track management threw in a twist ' today - all Expert classes ran 12 laps; next t ime it will be more, i n an ticipaiion of the final rac e at which all Experts will run 30 minute motos for money. So far , the purse is $ 15 0 and growing. There we re some ti red ri de rs in all Expert classes at the end. Jeff Seim who usu ally holds down num be r one, spent more time pickin , up than turnin ' on. David Reimer h ad the same kind of day only he and b ike went down h ard and bike lit on rid er. Out in fran t in both motos was St eve Williams followed by Randy Wing and J eff Nowak. Junior rider Dar Yarbrough got aced out on both his starts, worked fro m last to second th at first mota, turning times • like 1.20 and 1.21 - fast for that one mile track. Bob Connors and his Bultaco had it, all together this race and he flat flew, acing out Yarbrought the first mota and Brad Watson on the second, for two solid firsts. Yarbrough had th e most spectacular finish fo r the day, without getting hurt, that is. He musta' meant to jump the berm after the flag ; only hit it instead. The bike flipped, he rolled several times and lit standing up! Lance Kelly came all th e way "from Medford to ride the Open class and Money Rac e. He won his Open class first moto and then came to th e Money Race. On start on e, three went down on the firs t right-hander , s c attering spec tat ors and hay bal es. Bikes an d riders untangled and regrouped, th e flag flew and at th e l u st berm th ree more riders stacked up . On the th ird try , riders were a bit more cautious , made it through the lust hazards. Skee t Hise beg an to pull away and Randy Wing worked h is way o u t of th e pack to give ch ase. That was one "main even t" and th e other was third and fo ur th places - Mike Stubblefiel d and Lance Kelly. They fo ugh t th e whole way and on th at last lap whe re th e ac tion usually gets frantic, Kelly Shot from the last berm and made a run at Stub. As th ey approached the last jump, Stub had a half bike length ad vantage. They went airborne, both bikes drifted and Kelly came down wrong. All wrong. Bi ke and rider flipped, rolled and endoed, landing more than 125 , feet from the jump. Kelly will be stiff and sore for many weeks, but according to paramedics, he was saved from b roken back or neck by the shoulder gear he • was wearing. French's twoday MX By Sharon Bramlett GARBERVILLE,CAL., AUG. 3 I-SEPT. 1 Sunday started off two action filled days of hot and he avy racing at French's m otocross track.
