On the half-m ile, Way ne Rai ney lo o ked lik e he had it all sewed up and then on lap six , th e bike went so u r. TIdwell wa iled on by and Dann y Perkins was right th er e fo r second. He to ok his stoc k 250 Yamaha all the way to the 225 fo ot mark a nd then all hell broke lo o se. Nasci men to was th rown whe n the fro n t of the bike decide d to climb to th e clouds . It balan ced a minute o n th e re ar tire and the n di d a slow tum b le. Nasc imento a nd th e b ike bo u nced in a nec k a n d ne e k ra ce fo r the bottom of the hil l. Finally, he was ab le to dig in an d stop his mo mentum, the bike flip ped ov er th e t op o f him and jus t kept go ing. But, the o bjecl of a hill cl im b is no t to see who can make the m ost sp ec t ac u la r cras h, the o bje ct is to ge t over th e top o f a h ill. Some of the top riders in th e mid ran ge classes had already been to th e lin e and still n o one ha d sco red an ove r. Fin ally, Wes Evans, kn own as " th e gian t killer, " was on th e lin e for h is second run o f th e da y. In th e 400 mod ified class he had m anaged t o se t a high m ark o f 2 70 feet. No w he bro ught tha t h igh ly m o d ifie d Su zu ki back fo r anothe r try to the 450 mo d ified class . Bo b Graves, Sr. d id n 't win, but he probably wor ked just as hard fo r his thi rd pl ace finis h in th e 250 cc Novice half-mil e, es pecially since "a very b ad start go t him off the lin e las t a nd he had to wo rk h is wa y thro ugh traffic. It was Bobbi Hunter tha t literall y blew the gentl eman's doors o ff to ta ke h om e the go ld. Mark Butl er m or e th an m ad e up for his sec o nd in the half-mil e when he turn ed aro und and wo n th e 25 0c c No vice TT. It was Mark 's ball gam e from start to fin ish . Second p lace Ray Port er played dance aro und with Ric hard Fri tz and it was th e seco nd to las t lap before he ca ugh t h im. Ed di e Lawson riding flat tr ack for Gary J ones , t he m otocross special ist, pu lled a double wh am a as he pi cked off the 250cc Am ateur / Ex pert T'I' and the Op en Expe rt TT. On the TT Ed die ' go t a good start whic h gave h im the lead , bu t a much im proved an d very st rong Gre g Zehner wa s in h ot pursuit. n ot to m ention J ones' t eammat e J ack ie Mc Elw ain and Dan ~l cWh orter. Everybody settled d own to wait for mi st akes that never ca me and th ey fin ished in th e sa m e orde r. Ke n Owen also posted a do ub le win claiming bo th the Open Novice TT and hal f-mil e. Ke n was o ff on top of t he TT By th e tim e the second ro und o f compe tition go t underway it became o bvio us that it was really go ing t o tak e some supe r rid in g an d a lot o f lu ck to better th e first ru ns . In fact, o f the more th an 10 0 ru ns m ade, o nly abo u t six or seven rid er s got hi ghe r scores on the sec on d try. Again it was Eva ns , riding in the 4 00 m o di fie d class , who went o ver the t op . So, while th e sm all bikes bog ged down at th e bottom of the hill and bi g bi kes bo gged at the to p , Evans j us t flew ove r the hill t o tak e the Overall Winner's T rop hy.
