Another new hill
By An n A . Powell
SUNNYMEAD, CA L. , A UG. 17
The new hill of fered by park
owner, Doug Hall , was a mere 300
feet ta ll, bu t only ab out the first
175 feet had any thing ap pro aching a trail scarring the face .

On c e t he climb officially go t
u nde r way, it be ca me obvious tha t th is
was one tough h ill. Th e 200 fo ot mark
was n ot reache d un til m id-way thro ugh
th e 250 cc class. It wasn't until near th e
end of the class that tan Nascimen to
made his run . He to ok his stoc k 250
Yamaha all the way to the 225 fo ot
mark a nd then all hell broke lo o se.
Nasci men to was th rown whe n the
fro n t of the bike decide d to climb to
th e clouds . It balan ced a minute o n th e
re ar tire and the n di d a slow tum b le.
Nasc imento a nd th e b ike bo u nced in a
nec k a n d ne e k ra ce fo r the bottom of
the hil l. Finally, he was ab le to dig in
an d stop his mo mentum, the bike
flip ped ov er th e t op o f him and jus t
kept go ing.
But, the o bjecl of a hill cl im b is no t
to see who can make the m ost
sp ec t ac u la r cras h, the o bje ct is to ge t
over th e top o f a h ill. Some of the top
riders in th e mid ran ge classes had
already been to th e lin e and still n o one
ha d sco red an ove r.
Fin ally, Wes Evans, kn own as " th e
gian t killer, " was on th e lin e for h is
second run o f th e da y. In th e 400
mod ified class he had m anaged t o se t a
high m ark o f 2 70 feet. No w he bro ught
tha t h igh ly m o d ifie d Su zu ki back fo r
anothe r try to the 450 mo d ified class .
Evan s roar e d away fro m the lin e and
before th e crowd had time to won d er if
he coul d ma ke it h igh er th an o n hi s fir st
run, he disappe ared ove r the c re st to
score the fir st over o f the da y.

S teve Miller and Ed Turmross. Bo b has
been trying to ge t his new m achine
sorted o u t and it cert ain ly loo ked like
h is ho use wa s in ord er .
Bo b Graves, Sr. d id n 't win, but he
probably wor ked just as hard fo r his
thi rd pl ace finis h in th e 250 cc Novice
half-mil e, es pecially since "a very b ad
start go t him off the lin e las t a nd he had
to wo rk h is wa y thro ugh traffic. It was
Bobbi Hunter tha t literall y blew the
gentl eman's doors o ff to ta ke h om e the

Mark Butl er m or e th an m ad e up for
his sec o nd in the half-mil e when he
turn ed aro und and wo n th e 25 0c c
No vice TT. It was Mark 's ball gam e
from start to fin ish . Second p lace Ray
Port er played dance aro und with
Ric hard Fri tz and it was th e seco nd to
las t lap before he ca ugh t h im.
Ed di e Lawson riding flat tr ack for
Gary J ones , t he m otocross special ist,
pu lled a double wh am a as he pi cked off
the 250cc Am ateur / Ex pert T'I' and the
Op en Expe rt TT.
On the TT Ed die ' go t a good start
whic h gave h im the lead , bu t a much

J ones' t eammat e J ack ie Mc Elw ain and
Dan ~l cWh orter. Everybody settled
d own to wait for mi st akes that never
ca me and th ey fin ished in th e sa m e
orde r.
Ke n Owen also posted a do ub le win
claiming bo th the Open Novice TT and
hal f-mil e. Ke n was o ff on top of t he TT
By th e tim e the second ro und o f
compe tition go t underway it became
o bvio us that it was really go ing t o tak e
some supe r rid in g an d a lot o f lu ck to
better th e first ru ns . In fact, o f the more
th an 10 0 ru ns m ade, o nly abo u t six or
seven rid er s got hi ghe r scores on the
sec on d try. Again it was Eva ns , riding in
the 4 00 m o di fie d class , who went o ver
the t op .
So, while th e sm all bikes bog ged
down at th e bottom of the hill and bi g
bi kes bo gged at the to p , Evans j us t flew
ove r the hill t o tak e the Overall Winner's
