Furthe r back there was quite a race sh ap ing up for fo urth be tween Greg Heb ard (Hus), Gary Murphy (C-A) and Wayne Morrell (Pen) . With two laps left to go in the mota MacDannald seemed like the proverb ial shoo-in; but he lost co ncen trati on in a dusty turn and went down. Th e crash was a simple one, but Ron Self was there to cash in on it. MacD annald go t going again bu t back a bo ut seven sec on ds beh ind Self. My ers droppe d out with b ike problems giving third to Gary Murp hy and fourth to Way n e Morrell. Everybody in th e p its kn ew th at the seco n d m ota would tell all in th e Se1f-MacDannaid duel. MacD annald pulled on e of his famous holeshots, and Ron Self fell righ t in behin d in second place. Neil pulled away fro m Self and Ron just sat back and made the mos t of his position. Once again th ere was a real battle going on between Murphy , Heb ard and Morrell. Murp hy was again able to keep ahead of the gang and finishe d third behind MacDannaid and Self. Gre g Hebard picked up fourth for his day 's efforts. Overall MacDannaid picked up the win with second going to Ron Self and third to Gary Murphy . MacDannaid also dominated both motos of the 500 Pro class. Neil won both ' races hands down with a little competition from Bill Johnson (Yam). Gary Murphy (Hus) was consistent enough to take second. After 56 minutes of th at, th e first bikes were let out for practice wh ich was called off after 25 minutes because the track was still too slick. At race time , eight p.m., vehicles were again put on the track and by 8 ;,30 it was 'done up proper,' There 's an 11 p .m .-curfew at this tr ack and afte r an instant riders mee ting, the h eats were started with the 125s. All classes wen t quickly despite th e lar ge number of entries. The Open classes had " Q" numbers allover th e p lace - th e Bo oth brothers Louie and J im , J o hn Schauble, Randy Johnson ; Greg Wilson and Bob Th orpe back from a to ur of Cali forn ia ; Jeff Hurd, Frank Word and J eff Campbell. This wa s Campbell's first r ace on a big 01' 750 Triumph imported from down south and he did right well . After hi s 125 TD wh ich featured a restart, Rich Word stormed out on the tr ac k to have a little tal k with starter Ray Copeland. Word s flew and Word ended up as starter for the remainder of the TD 's, doing a good job and getting a heavy roun d o f applause from the crowd. The Open B was a wide open race. Louie Booth looked like a winner until he washed out in three-four, and positions two and three left the track in a fine effort to miss him. That put Andy Dressler in Number One and he went up the front straight kickin' his feet and y elling "Whoopee l," only to make one lap and bomb out on three-four. Someone forgot to tum off " Th e Tinkler" (that's Medford Raceway's appropriately named water truck) and as riders arrived in droves, they viewed a soggy, wet, short track. Vehicles crossed up better than Another rainy day in Bend as Deschutes Cycle Park re-opened after being temporarily closed. The rainy weather created a variety of track conditions to challenge the riders. The turkeys started off with the second largest class of the day . Jim Walker (Bul ) go bbled up all three motos from start to finish to emerge as top Turkey. The 125 Junior class was exciting with several riders taking their turn in the lead . After lots of passing and WFO ridin g it was Jeff Snider (Han) the cemen t mixer who h ad come all the way from last to take the first mota win, Seco nd mota held just as much excitement with cl ose bat tl es going on from th e lead ers all the way down to the last o f the pac k. Will Beard (Han) flash ed by in first followed by Dan Hartsfield (Yam), Steve Stewart (Ha n ) an d cement mixer Jeff Snider (Han). Points wer e so close goin g into the third m o ta th at all the riders were really berser kin ' it. Will Beard had the top spot but wa s qu ickly challenge d by ceme n t mixer Snider and a hard ch arging Chri s Sargent (Ha n ). Snider cop pe d th e lead , but was overtaken by Sargent wh o ended up the eventual rn a to winner. The cement mixer (Sni der) took the overall, followed by Beard and Sargent. Expert classes were combined today with some fantastic racing and grueling 30 minute motos , Local hero Rod Kentner captured the overall after lots of hard work. Kentner was challenged by top Experts Bad Brad Lecklider (C-A) who captured secon d overall and Mark Matheisen (Yam) who gassed his way to first place in the second mota and third overall. • Results in Results Section.
