When the next opening day finally dawned it rained again but not enough to halt enthusiastic riders who spen t two h o ur s drying the tr ack. Well, this past weekend was to have been th e 14th Annu al O regon St at e Ch a m p i o n s hip Motorcycle Race s. Saturda y 's h eat races were fast and easy with 138 entries. The super-slick track took a few by surprise an d they spent some "down " time. Brian Doland (Kids class) wiped out o n the inside right and was assisted off, lim ping badly. Next time around four bikes ended in a h eap in th e same spo t but everyone was up and going without too mu ch trouble. Randy J o rdan then smakced the tires on that same ri ghh an der and he was a while ge tting up . Th er e was a line -up and in tr o d uctions and Louie Booth, a pro fess ional rider fro m Gold Hill , took the st ar ter 's spot. The Elderly Gents boasted 10 riders and as they left the lin e Mi ke Lawless flipped over backward. He got himself an d bi ke re ady and did the same dam thing all over again! Joe Duncan , traveling in four th, made a speedy ru n at Big Jim Miller but reckoned without the Oak Tree Co m er where he ended with a stand-up finish . Heat three of the Minis saw Andros Bales in a long lead when his putter quit. Do believe he was out of gas. 100cc rider Vic Lilya shot off the line into Number One, as usual, with Ken Percy close on his heels. Percy went inside and out for a couple of laps , final ly took to the inside up the front straightaway, putting him in take-over position on the first lefthander, On the first tum of a 125 heat, th e Rothermal boy went down and Jane Colgrove had nowhere to go but over him bruisin g a leg. Janet left her bike, assisted him off the track and stayed with him until help arrived. Rich Word won his 125 he at but the bike st arted popping and ban gin g ri gh t af ter th e flag. Rich then jumped on a 250 and rode that heat lik e a wild man, with no one getti ng near him . Flyin' Brian Peterson had a ball on the slick track, pulling wheelies up the straights and literally throwing the bike into each co m er, keeping a wary eye on on e Jim McWhorter, who was within spittin' distance behind. On Sunday , we tried! A practice was held for all late entries and the track was in Iine shape, despite a few showers in the early morning hours. One hundred and eighty riders came out on the track for the line-up and introductions. The trophy dashes got underway and wen t as far as the 125 class before the darkening skies o pened up and the rains came down. Hard. Racing was declared postponed until Sunday , August 3 I. At that time the trophy das hes and m ains will resu me an d ' season high-point trophies will be awarded. • Weather permitting, of co urse!
