-t! C~ NBW8 NOBTII Oh say,did you see .. . Medford short track By Lynne Diltz ~ ..0 8 a; 0. a; sr: -e; - -. MEFORD, O RE. , AU G . 8 Some of th e speediest riders in Southern Oregon happened to all be on hand for the Open Class. Jeff Campbell and Frank Word, two super-good kids from Grants Pass were pitted toge ther in one heat. Word took the lead, Campbell chased and got under Word on a tum. As these same two came off the line for the A Main, it was crowded with seven other riders and Brett Howard took a quick lead, with Louie Booth right on his tail. Word and Campbell worked their way out of the pack to take over third and fourth and the race was on. The four bikes swooped out of turn four and cam e down the straigh taway wide open and side by each. There was some slipping and sIidin' in the tum and Word was swept off the track. Campbell dropped under and shot by both Howard and Booth as they were still side by side for the groove. Try as they would, they couldn't catch the speeding Campbell. As the announcer said, the track had its slick spots and quite a few riders found every darned one. Starter Ray Copeland was dead-centered by a wild rider as a heat of 125s left the line but it takes more than that to hurt a starter. There were a slew of Kids and the action was high. Craig Hill , Vic Lilya and Bruce Smylie were teamed in one heat. Hill had the lead until coming out of tum two Lilya came up from under and Hill left the track. Smylie gave chase but missed first by half a bi ke length. All three Miller boys were in one main, John and Jeff on Minis and Jim ona hundred. We think it prudent not to list their order of finish. • Results in Results Section. Brett Ho ward (abov e) grabbed th e holesh ot in Medford's Ope n Main, . but Jeff Campbell (bel ow) sw oope d him to complete a grand slam of the class.
