started out looking like a replay with
Marty first a wa y . But Wise who
practiced for tw o weeks on th e
Cycle Raffia tr ack, was determined not
to let Smith have it so easilv, Wise
smoked his Honda WFO through th e
first turn and nipped Smith for the lead
at the second turn and away they went.
But as they came around on lap one it
was Smi th 's turn to take the lead on the
back side of the course , dropping Wise
to second, with Danny Turner third,
Croft fourth , Hart fifth, Lu nde a close
six th, Warren Reid in seventh and
Mic key Boone eighth.
Ten minutes into the second moto "
Smi th was holding a slim lead over
Dan ny Turner, who had been charging
hard. Cro f t and Hart had m o ved up to
th ird an d fo urth courtesy of a Stevie
Wise miscue whic h had dropped hi m
back fr om second to fifth. At half-way
Tu rner go t by Smi th .
At th e th ree- q uar te r mar k Smith
reto ok the lead and as in the fir st m o to
it was a lead he had n o intention of
relinquish in g. As they approached the
finish, Tom my Cro ft 's bike went
belly-up, dropping him fro m a sure
second overall to twentieth .
At th e e nd of the day Marty Smith
was asked if he had fun. "No," he said,
" it was just too hot and dusty."

250 Support
TI,e highest premiums were paid on
co nsistency in the 250 Support class as
Dewitt Knox (Yam ) rode to th e overall
win amongst numerous broken bikes
a n d f allen riders. Knox moved
methodically from mid-pack in the first
moto to overhaul all but Mike Steams
(Mo n ) who was running away in the
lead and Bruce Baron in second. Ric ky
Pilgrim raised some eyebrows with a
new, good-handling and very powerful
Harley-Davidson , but a broken exhaust
pi pe cost him a possible h igh placing. In
th e second m oto Pilgrim finished a
strong second after rep air ing his pipe. •
