But Wise who practiced for tw o weeks on th e Cycle Raffia tr ack, was determined not to let Smith have it so easilv, Wise smoked his Honda WFO through th e first turn and nipped Smith for the lead at the second turn and away they went. But as they came around on lap one it was Smi th 's turn to take the lead on the back side of the course , dropping Wise to second, with Danny Turner third, Croft fourth , Hart fifth, Lu nde a close six th, Warren Reid in seventh and Mic key Boone eighth. Ten minutes into the second moto " Smi th was holding a slim lead over Dan ny Turner, who had been charging hard. Cro f t and Hart had m o ved up to th ird an d fo urth courtesy of a Stevie Wise miscue whic h had dropped hi m back fr om second to fifth.At half-way Tu rner go t by Smi th . Knox moved methodically from mid-pack in the first moto to overhaul all but Mike Steams (Mo n ) who was running away in the lead and Bruce Baron in second. Ric ky Pilgrim raised some eyebrows with a new, good-handling and very powerful Harley-Davidson , but a broken exhaust pi pe cost him a possible h igh placing.
