o nly b ecause the close ratio 5·s peed lets
the engi ne rev up and pull quicker. It's a
d e fin ite imp rovement over the old
b ikes, and it now feels as fast as
a nyt hi ng el se in the 250cc class.
Mid-ran ge ' horsepower is its definite
strong point. Bet ween 3000· 6000 rpm
the 4 . 5 0 rear Metzeler ties up
mercilessly wjtlL! he tu rf and sling shots
the b ike do wn the track every ti me you
grab a gear. If yo u get lazy an d let the
rpm 's fall below 3000 in a tum or on a
hill yo u' ll have to slip th e cl utch so me
to ge t b ack up in th epow erb an d quick ly,
but t hat o nly h appen s if you 're p lay ing
and not bl astin g aro und the track at
raci ng speeds .
H andling re mains pure Mai co , b ut
even b etter d ue to the longer t ravel
su spen sion an d im proved power. Mak o s
h ave always been fro n t end hand lin g
machines, as opposed to b ikes like t h e
Yamah a YZ or Hu sky GP which are
b ack end handler s. With bikes like th e
Husky yo u sit up o n the gas tan k an d
w ork t he front end of the b ike wh ile t he
rear takes care of itself. The Maico
h andles everything o n th e fro n t en d,
soaking up all th e bumps as you rocket
down the track . If there's a p ar t icular ly
large bump or ditch yo u can bring up
the fro nt en d wi th the throttle, but
mo st of the ti me yo u'll leave it d own .
With the front of the Maico taking care
of itself, you stand up and lean back on
the pegs as you co n t rol the b ack en d of
the bike with your legs. Steering is also
co n tro lled more with body moveme nts
then throttle action . Precise handling is
the Maico GP's strong po in t an d o nly
the standard rear sho cks prevent ed it
fro m exhibiting its full potential .
The new 250 GP Maico is an excellent
mo tocro sser for the Expert or Amateur
racer. The S I i 49 price tag m ay see m a
littl e steep, but ex cept fo r the p ur chase
of so me b et ter shocks, the bike no
longer needs $300 worth of bolt-on
a cce ssories to ma ke it rideab le. It
alrea dy has all the goodies fro m pl astic
fenders an d tan k, to sho ulde rless rims
and a Twin Air filter. The n icest thing is
t hat it retain s all the go od qualit ies that
Maico has b een fam ou s fo r in the past ,
like handling and b ro ad usable p ower
wh ich ha ve even been imp ro ved up on ,
but n o l o n ge r will it keep th at
rep utatio n as a co bby and fragile wo rks
bi ke . If yo u' d be ow ne d J ap an ese b ikes
in t he pas t because yo u wanted
some thing th at was reliab le , you'll b e
glad to know that yo u ca n now " have
your Maico and rid e it too:'
