Torpedoes Juvenile Hall Benefit By Elaine Jones CORO NA , CAL., AUG. 6 All the ingredients were present for one of the best races of the year, two hundred plus riders, prizes, beautiful trophies, and plenty of spectators. What went wrong? Very simple. The race was shot down by the curfew imposed by the Riverside District At tomey. Most of you kno w the problems Corona Raceway has been plagued with the past few years. Many of you racers came face to face with just how those restrictions, which are rigorously enforced, affe ct y ou as a rider. The real rub comes when you find o ut that the judge at the time the settlement was made, wanted to allow an emergency clause which would have let the program finish , The D.A.'s office refused to accept it saying the track would misuse the emergency clause. This particular misuse was a be nefit for the Riverside County J uvenile Hal l Auxiliary. This group of dedicated men and wo m en vo lunteer their time to work with the kids and the $1,200 profit made from the generosity . of rid ers, parents, friends and the spe ctators will be used to fund the many programs they sponsor. The D.A. sits in his office with a min d open only to a few people who make acc usations which are rather exaggerated. Meanwhile , he hands down edicts su ch as mu ffler type on all en try blanks, d.b. readings every week, te sting on all new mufflers on the market with a me mber o f the D.A.'s office present as an observ er. By the .way, for that testing, the track had to get special permission to conduct them o n a night there was n o racing. The results fr om all this testing has to be submitted to the D.A. 's office every wee k and the penalties are stiff if they are n o t co mp lied with. . Sin ce the race was not co mpleted it is very difficult to try and report it, but I can report on the generosity and understanding attitude of the ri ders. What could have been turned into a very ugly scene was settled by the riders with less than one tenth of them wanting their m oney back. The majority of the riders came from out o f the county and drove many miles on a week night. The Sidehacks, who have made the Benefit race sin ce its inception four years ago, Pro riders who didn't even get much of a semi and no m ain , Sp o rtsm en who got short races, (Continued on page 35)
