Halcomb had to settl e for second, but everybody had a feeling he'd be back in the sec ond mot o tryin g harder than ever. Everybo dy was righ t. Kim led the first m ot o until he dropped his bi ke on a sharp right tum , givin g Hall the ch ec kered flag for the first moto . Th eir sec on d moto , Kim got the lead o n Hall an d kept it, wi th Hall breathing down his ne ck until the last lap. Then Hall pas sed Kim on a turn onl y a qua rter of a lap fro m the fin ish line. As th e two ap proached the last jump th ey were neck and ne ck. Kim came ov er the jump alone , as Hall lost con tro l o f his bike just seconds before. The spec tat or s went wild when Kim du cked under th e ch ecker ed flag. In th e 250 Junior class, Conrad Stitser (Hu s) rode his second race as a J un ior an d took second place as Matt Hansen (Hus) ro de lik e a pro for first. Cherry-picking days are over for 125 Junior Sam Penrod and Open Novice Steve Shaw as today 's race moved Penr od up to Exper t and Shaw to a J uni or. • Pioneer Short Track-going strong By Ann Carr OAKDALE , CAL.,J ULY 19 The seventh race in th e Oakdale MC short track season happened on a strong note this evening as 267 race rs vied for 48 trophy spots and 12 semi-pro payoff positions. Ray Hook of Blendzall Corporation also sweetened the po t for the 125, 250, and 360 Novices as he donated a case of Blendzall Oil to each cl ass winner. Foll owing his win at Lodi Friday night in the 125 division was Stockton Honda rider Steve Alb erdi. St eve jumped in front of the large field on lap one an d ca rrie d to the finish ahead of Randy Bradshaw ; Randy Martin, Randy Bereman , and Fran k Hannah. Mr. Hook's oil was captured in the 25 0 Main by Cere s rider Don "Mudder" McBride in his first 250 win. Don was strongly challenged by Tim Cook of Salinas, Modesto 's ' Don "T aylor , and Louie Orozco. Expert ac tion featured a near up set in the 360 ran ks as Carl Yerby (Hon) had th e somewh at slic k cou rse dialed in th e Main , leading top Pro Novice Ted D avids on fo r 12 laps b efore going wide in th e spe ctator tum and giving Ted a chance to duck under for the win. Th e 125 Expert Main noted a couple of new faces tonight as motocrosser Chu ck Goodrich topped a good field. Medford Raceway short track By Lynne Diltz MEDFORD, ORE., J ULY 18 There was ac tion aplenty at Medford, with a slew of new numbers on th e sce ne. Th e track was in sup er condition, so there were very few spills and no serious injuries. Three of the riders were from Kingman , Arizona. One trophied in the 12 5 class and one didn't but got the most attention. He was six-year-old J ames Williams, riding a Mini in the Kids 23
