C\I ~ ..... til :l be Dan Baker (BuI) pulled the holeshot in the opening 250 Expert moto as he rode WFO around the course while Rodney Poque, Danny Garland and Delno Becker gave pursuit. With Baker riding in his usual out-of-control style he soon had a good lead over the pack. Delno Becker had moved his CZ into second after Garlan d and Poque fell on differen t parts of the Live Oak course. Becker now set his sights on the d istant, berserking Baker. Halfway through the race his bike began to give •him tro uble. Every time he gave it the gas hard it wo uld temporary mis-fire so Delno had t o set tle for secon d place spot in t he race behind Baker. Baker go t o ne of his rare good starts and led the 250 Experts fo r t he first few laps until a really pump ed-up Lonnie Murphy (Mon) go t by. MX at Plymouth By Sallee Hilton PLYMOUTH, CAL., JULY 13 It only took Dave Longcor (Hus) slightly over one lap to be first place afte r the start of the 250 Expert first moto. Floyd Davis (Bul), who had been out of racing for a month or so, wasn't impaired by his lay-off. He grabbed the hole shot with Don Sandrctto (Bul ) right behind him, but tired early, dropping back and letting Sandrctto and Pat Richter (CZ) by. These two waged a continuous battle for second behind Longcor. Sandretto DNFed in the eighth lap, so Richter tried for Longcor but DEALER INQUIRIES INVITED Caltt residents add 6°. sa~ co uldn't quite co ver the distance in time . Now running in third place was Darrell Shultz (BuI) who had gone down in the first tum off the start and had been busily making up for time lost. Davis, in fourth, was figh ting off Scott Henry (Bul ) who had also gone down in the first lap (an d the third lap. And the seventh lap). So the order at the flag was Longcor with Richter right on his tail ; back a ways were Shultz, Davis, and Henry. Second moto, both Longcor and Schultz came off the line in front, Longcor holding it on to take the first and gain a long lead, while Richter was corning up from behind to join h im . Schultz, next up after Richter we nt by him, p ulled out of the race in the third lap, in pain, with a recurring knee injury, leaving third place to Sandrctto. Ooyse Holl an d, Jr. (Suz) won the drag race in the 125 Expert class with Mark Hilton (Hon) on his tail. In th e second lap Holland did a "Laugh-in" type flop going ar ound a hairpin t um. Hilton wa s p ast before he coul d ge t going again , but only te mporarily, as he regained the front spo t in the fift h lap. Hollan d an d Hilton stayed close to each other, but far ah ead of th e rest of th e p ac k. Perry Gan n (Yam), trying the 125 clas s after t urn ing Expert just recently in 250, came in third, with Ro y Seiler (Hon) fo urth . In the second round it was a three-way duel off the line with Holland, Hilton and Gann. The third lap it changed to Holland, Gann and Hilton, with Holland stretching his lead almost a third of the way round the track, leaving Hil ton to chase Gann for the rest of the rnoto. Hilton fell near the end of the race and dropped further back but s till retained third place. Chalma Roberts (Hon), another new Expert, finished fourth this time after a DN F in the first moto when his chain broke while he was running third. Pat Richter (CZ) took a long lead in the first Open Expert moto with Charlie Marshall, on a new Bultaco, and Casey Vail (Mai ) swapping second place as they to ok turns watering out. Marshall, just getting bac k into motocross since his recent marriage, ended up second by taking the longe r (but drier) line through the waterholes, The second moto was a heartbreaker for some fans and a triumph for others. Marshall, in first and going stro ng, with Richter at a barely respectable distance behind him , also going strong, came up for the finish and a mere 10 feet from it, just around the hairpin, he spun out, killing the engine. While trying to push the lon gest 10 feet he 'd ever encountered, Richter ducked under for the win and the first place money. _ Results in Results Section. la • Boogie ti me for this 125 Nov ice d ivision .
