Injuries plague "Speedway is not a contact sport:' Who said that? By Denn is Greene Ventura, California July 29, 1975 Mike Bast still leads the points race even though he did not get into either Main Event Tuesday night at Ventura. Mike has won 14 Scratch Main Events this season; his brother Steve has won twelve' Jeff Sexton has eight' Rick Wood~ . s!=ven, and Mike Curoso has won SlX . Sexton nailed number eight Tuesday in a close race with Larry Shaw, Curoso and Bill Cody. Cody went out in the first lap, and Curoso and Shaw battled for second as Jeff stretched out for the victory. Hero of the Handicap Main was Bill Gray, who has been out for the past three weeks playing movie hero. Bill's victory was the third time this season he has topped the field . . • . CA 90 670 Gu y Waterson, the fourth-year rider from Mission Hills, Ca. continued his steady march through the Division One ranks with a perfect performance Wednesday nigh t at Inland Motorcycle Speedway, cli maxed by a triumph in the Handicap Main event. Guy missed nearly the first half of the season, but has earned three main victories in the past two and a-half weeks. On a track which held a perfect outside cushion of traction for those able to utilize it, Bruce Penhall steered out around Mike Bast and led the entire four-lap distance - to secure his first San Bernardino Scratch Main win of the season. Once again, Mike Bast, last wee!"s Scratch winner, was runnerup behind brother Steve, current U.S. Champ, who was making his first local appearance. In a "family battle, " the Brothers Bast were the featured Match race. Virtually wheel-to-wheel for the entire two laps, Mike, using the outer cushion, swung wide into the fmal straight to take a desperate decision. Sex to n p ocketed the win money at Irwindale Raceway for the fourth ti me in five weeks and like his other wins, this was brutally hard fo r the oppositio n to accept - he did it convincingly with sure, brute fo rce. J eff wo n hi s he at, h olding back Bruce Penhall, and the Semi over Mike Bast, Mark Cherry an d Jim Fishback. When the gate jumped fo r the start of the Main, Sexton dove into the lead and pulled away. Bill Cody crashed early in that race and on the second lap, Mike Bast's bike quit, leaving it a two-rider chase with Steve Bast as the runnerup.
