Tony DiStefano squeezed h is Suzuki past Karsmakers on the opening lap and put the rush on Hartwig. DiStefano men tried too hard to cu t under Hartwig near the end of the lap , dumping it and falling back to sixth. Two laps later, Hartwig pulled a beautiful pass in the same turn where Tony had gone down, and took the lead away from Stackable, Meanwhile, Jimmy Weinert boogied his Yamaha up from fifth and also made a successful move on Stackable, setting himself up to take over the lead several laps later. At the same time Weinert was over taking S t a ck a b l e , D iStefano r ep as s e d K a rsm a k ers i n his cras h-recovery ch arge. Both Weinert an d Stackable go t by Hartwig at the sam e tim e , m aking the lineup re ad Weinert , Stackable, Har tw ig, DiStefano, Karsmakers, Rex Staten and Velky for eighth before the Czech retired two laps later . Tony continued his reco very run, even tually edging Hartwig and Stackable to fall in behind Wein ert at th e round 's end. Hartwig crash ed , hurting his side , and dropped ba ck. The moto ended with the first three finishers lined up in numerical order : Weinert (2), DiStefano (3) and Stackable (4 ). Karsmakers, Grossi and Staten filled the next three slots. Pierre Karsmakers won th e charge to the rust turn of round two, followed closely by J immy Weinert, St eve Stackable and Tony DiStefano. Jimmy jammed past Karsmakers on the rust lap , but slipped in the mud and dropped back to fifth before getting the Yamaha restarted. Fast -moving action filled the next few laps as both Stackable and DiStefano overtook Pierre on lap three. Tony then put the pressure on Steve, but in an attempt to pass, misjudged and fell. The crash almost too k St ackable out, too, and the wave th at Steve flipped th e downed Suzuki rider wasn 't exactly a peace sign. Billy Grossi moved in to third following Tony 's fall (DiStefano lo st no positions in the crash), Jammin 'Jim took the second tumble of th e mota near th e finish lin e, losin tw o places and_ de tunin g bike an d bodY both in the pro ce ss. Tony rallied for another shot at takin g t h e lead from Stackable, su ccessfully doing so a few laps later. At approximately the 35 minute mark, DiStefano held an eight-second lead over Stackable, who in turn main tained an IS -second cushion on Grossi. Karsmakers he ld fourth in front of Weinert. On the final lap the Jammer forced past Kars makers, Reportedly , Kar s m aker s fell during the tight transaction. Tony's two-one total topped Steve 's three-two in the overall standings, followed by J ammin' Jim's one-four, Sugar Bear Grossi's five-three and Pierre's four-five. - C.H.
