Top Elim inator Wes Evans gets a little too
much t raction. but was able to make a
better run the second t ime around.

The dryness of the hill proved the
und o in g of bi ke after bike. There was
j ust no tra ction, and despite the look of
the hill, gettin g to the to p proved an
im possible task for most of the
climbers. On ly one third o f the riders
were able to top the hill fro m the
starling lu g a t th e base.
The log was moved higher on the hill
and into th e deep, loose, powdery dust.
This spot really took its toll. A run of
100 feet fro m the st art wa s good
enough to decide several cl as s winners.
In fact, by the end of this round of
co mpetit ion, only four riders were still
in the running. All were go ing fo r the
top eliminator spot, and m ost had
advanced to this poin t without a single
miss.
Kerry Peterson, ridin g in both the
400 st ock and the 400 mo d ified classes,
man aged to get over the top twice. Wes
Evans, also in the 4 00 m od ifi ed class,
went over, the n repe ated h is over in th e
4 50 modified class. Neal Macke l, riding
a mo d ified 5 00cc Hu sky , sco re d an
over , as d id Ro n T ho mp son , also in the
500 modified class. Thompson ju mped
t o th e 650 mod ified cla ss, and an o t her
over. Mac kel, this time on h is po werful
Tri umph, was the only ride r in the Open
class to make the to p fro m this point.
With th e star ting lo g now at th e 305
foo t mar k, Peterso n was dropped fro m
co m pe titio n, then Evans fell out of the
4 00 modifie d class. Evans, st ill o n the
same 400 Su zu ki , but riding in the 450
modified clas s, finally wen t over th e
to p .
Thompson, mo un t ed on a highly
mod ified 5 00cc Yamaha, followe d
Evans o ver th e t o p puttin g the pressure
on Nea l Mackel in the Op en class. Mac,
to no o ne 's surprise , also m ade it over.
Agai n the lo g was m o ved h igher o n the
hill .
Each rider had p ic ked u p a miss
somewh ere along the line of th e
com pe tition. Each m an had only o ne
ch ance to set a high mark from this
po int. The o ne who we nt h ighes t wo ul d
be th e top elim inator and o ver all
winner.
Evan s got off th e line first. He came
to a halt at the 389 foot m ark.
Thompson also go t stopped a t the 389
foot mar k. Th e last run of the day was
o n the log. Neal Ma ckel and th at ro ar ing
T riu m ph were underway. Then wit h
everyone ready for a winner, Mac
stopped, once aga in at th e 389 fo ot
mar k !
A 400cc Su zuki, a 5 00cc Yamaha
and an 8 00cc Tri umph h ad all fin ished
in a de ad heat. Eac h rider h ad gar ne red
tw o misses, but none had bee n ab le t o
eliminat e the o ther t wo . For the first
ti me an ex tra run had to be given in
order t o find the to p winner fo r th e
day.
