There was j ust no tra ction, and despite the look of the hill, gettin g to the to p proved an im possible task for most of the climbers. On ly one third o f the riders were able to top the hill fro m the starling lu g a t th e base. The log was moved higher on the hill and into th e deep, loose, powdery dust. This spot really took its toll. A run of 100 feet fro m the st art wa s good enough to decide several cl as s winners. In fact, by the end of this round of co mpetit ion, only four riders were still in the running. All were go ing fo r the top eliminator spot, and m ost had advanced to this poin t without a single miss. Kerry Peterson, ridin g in both the 400 st ock and the 400 mo d ified classes, man aged to get over the top twice. Wes Evans, also in the 4 00 m od ifi ed class, went over, the n repe ated h is over in th e 4 50 modified class. Neal Macke l, riding a mo d ified 5 00cc Hu sky , sco re d an over , as d id Ro n T ho mp son , also in the 500 modified class. Thompson ju mped t o th e 650 mod ified cla ss, and an o t her over. Mac kel, this time on h is po werful Tri umph, was the only ride r in the Open class to make the to p fro m this point. With th e star ting lo g now at th e 305 foo t mar k, Peterso n was dropped fro m co m pe titio n, then Evans fell out of the 4 00 modifie d class. Evans, st ill o n the same 400 Su zu ki , but riding in the 450 modified clas s, finally wen t over th e to p . Thompson, mo un t ed on a highly mod ified 5 00cc Yamaha, followe d Evans o ver th e t o p puttin g the pressure on Nea l Mackel in the Op en class. Mac, to no o ne 's surprise , also m ade it over. Agai n the lo g was m o ved h igher o n the hill . Each rider had p ic ked u p a miss somewh ere along the line of th e com pe tition. Each m an had only o ne ch ance to set a high mark from this po int. The o ne who we nt h ighes t wo ul d be th e top elim inator and o ver all winner. Evan s got off th e line first. He came to a halt at the 389 foot m ark. Thompson also go t stopped a t the 389 foot mar k. Th e last run of the day was o n the log. Neal Ma ckel and th at ro ar ing T riu m ph were underway. Then wit h everyone ready for a winner, Mac stopped, once aga in at th e 389 fo ot mar k ! A 400cc Su zuki, a 5 00cc Yamaha and an 8 00cc Tri umph h ad all fin ished in a de ad heat. Eac h rider h ad gar ne red tw o misses, but none had bee n ab le t o eliminat e the o ther t wo .
