Well when I got th ere Mitch was suiting up, so I asked him ho w he felt about hi s first District race in ove r a year. He said he was going to take it easy, but just like a boxer when the bell rings he ' starts punching, when the banner went down Mitch sp ru n g a wild hair and went for it! Pulling out a 20 second lead at the bomb Mitch (Hus) was fo llowed by the new n um ber one A.C. Ba kken (Hus) an d hot 'o n his heels was an Amateur by the name of Joel Stankavich (Mono), these three stay ed that way past the first check. But soon Joel made a bobble that cost him many places! Back in the dust th ere were m an y riders who were trying to m ake up time but the tricky twisty co urse too k its toll on mach inery , Ti m Bowman who literally destro yed his fron t hub and sp o kes. The next Op en ri der to pull up to the leaders from a ho hum start was Ron Wright (Mono), fo llowed by three Division One riders Andy Kirker (Mono), Ronnie Mark (CZ), Charles Barney (Mono)! So mewhere on the second loop A.C. got a flat and lost five pla ces m oving Ro n into secon d spot, and the rest up res pectively and that's how they finished. Except that at the chec kered Mitch pulled out a six minute 36 second lead on an Open Husky. So for the Amateur class first wen t to Joel , but in second was Ron Pinion and doing fine until o n the second loo p at t he six check when a Rambler to ld h im he was fifth, so he slowed down lett ing second place Dave Bowman (Mo no ) and third place Ross Collins (Mo no) go by and finis hing in that order. In th e Division Two Expert class for first , and 13 th overa ll was Dean Modesett (Pen), fo llo wed moments later by second pla ce J eff Kaplin (Hus ). Coming in for third a new face for high fini shi ng, Roger Read (Pen ). In the Trail Expert class Charlie Hammel , Jr. bro ke his wrist, with th e lead be in g given to his good friend Marc Cartwrigh t (Pen) . Pull ing in for second place is a rider that has had a slow sea so n bu t is ge tt ing ba ck in th e swing of things, Doug Martin (Pen ). Rounding out third for the class ~ good consisten t rider. Bob Meyers (Pen) : . .
