Sectio ns fo ur th ro ugh seve n were on ste ep ro ck o utcrops alo ng th e Pac khorse Trai l, and, alth o ug h relative ly easy, gave a rider a go o d vie w o f where he'd likely land if he m ade a serio us m ist a ke. The loo p was held togethe r b y a steep , twi sting, nearly un ride ab le d o wnhill th a t d ro pp ed 80 0 feet in less th an a m ile . The 12 5 Novice race was a crowd pleaser wit h J o h n Sud be rry (Ya m) responded with a fanta st ic d isp lay o f ta lent for th e spectators, many attendin g moto rcycle races for t he fir st time as this opener was a benefit fo r the Mo d est o High School athletic program. "Boo Boo" Bob Scally (Mr . Roberts Rules o f Order h imself) , national co mpeti to r Allen Ken y o n , an d to p Alii A Novi ce Ted "Torco" Davidson were there . " Torc o " quickly let it be kn own that nothing had ch an ged fro m last seaso n as he be gan h is defense of his "King of Pioneer Sh o rt Track " titl e b y co p pin g both the 125 and 360 Expert Mains. Ted suffered a fall in the 125 heat when he tried an ins ide pass of new Ex pe rt Rick Wo ods b ut in t he Mai n Teddy p assed Wo ods clean ly . . The m a rgin of victory in t he 3 6 0 Main wou ld in dicate an eas y win, but n o t re ally so as Ken yon and Scott Pearson c harged for I 0 lap s.
