Chet Davis (Mai) broke a cha in, Chuck Sun (Bul) came around at th e tail of th e pack on the first lap and Les Womack [Can -Am ] sputtered through the ra ce with mechanical trouble. Matt James (Bul ) too k an un challenged lead and Mark Gre~n (Ka w ) got by Barney Newman [Hus] as time ran out for second. Sun had moved all th e way to fourth at the flag . J ames led most of the second mota but Sun finall y moved by to cinc h a second overall (via the last mota) with Mark Gregson third, also with five points. Gary Kuest (Yam ) led in the Open Pro first race until Barney Newman (Hus) worked through the pack to take over. Barney took to the front early and by a large margin in the final race . Gary held second until the waning laps when Bob Rush (Hus) suddenly came alive from mid-pack at abo ut the same time Newman slowed at the front with a flat front tire. Rush mo ved on to take th e lead. Newman held second un til the last lap . He almost lost it on the down hill jump and finally did in the Sturn following when the front end washed out. Kuest went by for first overall and Newman finished behind him for second. • seaso n this even ing with 208 riders competing on a bumpy and slick co urse. St ockton 's David Burton and Con cord 's Bill Calicura took the fea t ure \ rac es of the evenin g with Cali cura copping his third straigh t in the Op en Expert Main. Bill faile d to get off the line well, bu t got help from his frie nds as severa l rid ers piled up at the tre e tum . Bill and Rick Otto wer e ab le to slip through the m ess and stage a goo d ch ase for the chec kered flag. Rick pressured at every spot but CaIicura's motor was spot on. Belmont's Mik e Asmann rode a very high groove try ing to ge t around John Fite in th ird but never co uld get a good drive. Burton in the 250 Expert feat ure jumped in to the lead and wh ilc Ted Bailey held off Ray Huff and Kim Jorgensen, David was able to scoot his Burton Cycle Gringo to a co mfo rtable win . The other three struggled but remained second, third, and fourth respectively. Novi ce action featured good rides by Stockton's Dan Foley (Pen) in the 175 Main and Modesto 's Brian Sanders (Bul) in th e combined 350·500 race. Foley escaped serious challenges in the heat and Main from lo cal Honda rider and m ini steward Bill Arbogast. Meanwhile, Lodi's Rafe Heath worked h is way through the pack and took a hard fough t second for Honda. Sanders, meanwhile, took a victory over Yamaha challenge rs Gary Ham and Mike Romig.
