The last lap belonge d to Lowe and the crowd loved it. GiUespie finished second with Bubba Rush putting in a good charge that carried him into third. There was hurried activity in the pits as most of the riders spent their time planning how to ride the final on a track that was be coming slower and slo wer with every race. Rex Beauchamp smiled, sh ook his head and said, "Man, this place is weird. It 's all vroooom (m aking a motion cocking the handlebars full lock) and not a very ra cy track." Rick Hocking, who was running the Trophy Race was more to th e point. "There's j u st no traction out th ere for - a Yamaha. " Most of the riders were concentrating on the front tire rather than the rear although incorrect edge and pressure on th e rear could cause all sorts of problems. "The front en d matters most because you have to ride a very tight line. You push the front tire and hope th at yo u get traction on the rear," stated Dave Seh!. The Trophy Race saw Mike J o hnso n take the victory, but not before some high drama had tr anspired. Johnson led from the nag with a hard charging Hank Scott and Mert Lawwill c10~ behind. On th e fourth lap Scott went under Johnson in tum two and th e ch ase for first reversed itself. Mechanical ills got Scott on ce agai n afte r he had pulled out a lead and he retired to the pits leaving Johnson in the lead. Mike n o soo ner took over than his Harley began to sm o ke and h e backed off slightly letting Mert Lawwill c10~ the gap. Th e laps ran o ut and J ohnson took the checkers a safe distance ahead. National Pole sitter Jay Springsteen chose the inside pole even though both riders in the Semis had made good use of outside starts. Keener and Beauchamp HUed in the next slots with Denny Palm gren, Doug Sehl, Gary Scott, Sassaman, Dave Sehl, Freeman, Roberts, Hateley, Droste, Eves and Lowe forming the 14 man starting line. The start was less than pe rfect causing some riders to openly complain that they thought it bad enough to warrant a red nag and a restart. It di dn't and the race went on with Scott and Beauchamp holding a side by side lead as Keener and Springsteen did the same for second. The rest of the field was somewhere c10~ behind in a choking cloud of dust. By the fourth lap Springsteen had zapped SCali for second and was putting p ressu re o n Beauch amp . Keener had also slipped by Gary -and the fro nt running foursome was being closely followed by Freeman. On the next lap Kee ner disappeared wi th a broken ca m ; Scott moved back into third, and Springsteen was waiting one more lap before swapping position with Rex.
