~----------------------~_~ -~-. . - - --- .- ' Springsteen held a stra ightaway length lead on the field at the fin ish. Rex Beauchamp rode the limestone to second place. ------------------------, THE "IN THING" past Scott and in to third by the sixth lap, b ut two laps later he was righ t back in the tail enders starting all over agai n after taking evasive action to avo id a fal len rider (either Freeman or Eves since b oth fell in the early lap s). With the starter giving the crossed halfway flag to everyone on lap 10, Springsteen had half a straightaway lead on Beauchamp and was stretching it out a lit tle each lap. Scott was in third followed by Doug Sehl, Lowe and Palmgre n . Roberts, at this point was mired back in about ninth with a lot of traffic in front and nowhere to go. Or so m ost people thought. The Champ had different ideas and. two laps later. crossed over the berm, past the cushion (that was a good four to six inches deep in the comers) and out so close to the waIl that the hay bales rustled as he blasted by with a rooster tail spewing forth. It had to be the. most bitchin ' ride seen in quite a while. The gamble paid off and Ro berts picked up spot after spot until he was fifth and then by passed Do ug Sehl into fourth . Mid pack positions in th e race changed often with riders slipping off the gro ove and then fighting bac k to reclaim th eir SP Olt or in some instan ces, be tt er it . In t he clouds o f dust an d the excite me n t it was hard to keep trac k. Springsteen, by virtue of "having t he track wired" as Rex Beauchamp wo uld la ter say. had almost a full straighaway lead at th e chec kers. Beauchamp took an easy second. although as the track got slick in the closing laps the option of setting up his chassis for traction so tha t it pushed the front wheel out may have seemed a little scary . Scott, in PACKAGE th ird . was being b reathed on by Roberts who, t hrough sheer "cajones " had closed a gap that see med safe a few lap s earlier. Doug Sehl picked up fift h place points with Bre n t Lowe ga thering in h is first National points in sixth pl ace . To Kenny Roberts, tha t high line ride was th e thinking man's way to get as close to th e leaders as po ssible. "It was tacky eno ugh up there to where I knew I co uld do it. My new engine and chassis are working good an d I'm glad these two races are over since this type track is the worst for me. Now it's down to business.
